Has it got spark? take off one of the leads, Stick your finger in and try starting the car...
OK OK DONT DO THAT! it will be painful :P put a rubber handled screw driver in and hold it 5mmish away from something like your engine crain mount point, you will see sparks.

Brand new CAS as in changed the whole Dissy? sure you didnt put it back in wrong ie, 180deg out? would explain why it is not wanting to start/ running like **** (smoke)
Otherwise poor earth, or corroded batt terminals, boiling water/ wire brush.
Get a multimeter over it?

check all the plugs are nice and tight, and look into the AFM & CAS plugs to check the sockets are nice and straight for the pins.
Have you done anything recent under the engine bay you may of knocked something of or anything? not saying you did put even puting the leads on in the wrong order could effect this when u done the plugs
Check the fuse's and maybe swap some of the relays to others that could possibly make it start.
My inter cooler piping hit the dizzy and knocked the ignition timing right down could be worth checking out. but yeah i'm real out of ideas haha

20-03-09, 15:03 GMT+10#10 pull a plug out, plug it into the lead and eirth it out, try starting the car and it will spark.. You hope. also gap them right.
When you try starting the car with a spark plug missing it will make some odd sounds becuase no compression in the cly, all good. just dont run the car if it starts, Fuel will come out.

20-03-09, 17:01 GMT+10#17 My money is on the fuel pressure reg. Diaphram may have siezed causing high pressure. This would explain the black smoke.
Return line may have a blockage in the tank.....happened to me a few years back. Pull the line off at the tank and run it into a bucket then see if it will start.
