so this has happened twice now. i'm coming onto the freeway, I turn that little corner to go onto the on-ramp and the whole car just loses traction and I have to struggle not to put my car into another wall... I end up facing the oposite direction on the on-ramp like an idiot, despite my best efforts to keep the whole thing under control.
And I know the first thing most of you are going to say, 'stop driving like a hoon and you wont lose traction'. However i'm the most careful driver you'll meet, at the time I can't have been doing more than 40 k's... so bare with me. More to that point my old VL did not do this once, and I drive them both exactly the same.
Any way my question is, what do I have to change in terms of suspension and driveline to stop this car trying to kill me every time I turn a corner?
I'm asking here because I'm no expert, and I know many of you are...my short list consisted of:
-Decent tyres (15's instead of these sh|tty 14 inch stockies... and 225's)
-An LSD centre (so that i can at least control it when it does lose traction, stupid single spinners...)
-New springs (lower ones)
-New shock absorbers
-Possibly new bushes, maybe some nolethane?
-And sway bars... Wtf are they? What do they do? Do I need them ...etc.etc.
I realise the last one sounds like I'm a ricer, but seriously there must be some use for them, otherwise those idiots wouldn't put them there.
Thanks for any help guys.
-Vince.

What sway bars are you using front and rear. Aftermarket big bars on the rear can cause really bad oversteer

is there any road surfacing on the ramps. In NZ we get green bus markings and cyclist crap onsome of the ramps. when it rains it goes like oil. Got me a few times. might not be the car?

buy a set of bridgestone adreniline potenza's
i paid 180 for mine each for 16/50/225's and they are brilliant
that was when they were brand new though, dunno what there worth now

This will also cause oversteer

learn to react quicker and powerslide out of it with one hand out the window
go check the surface out there is a good chance there is oil or something all over the road

ya, cars dont automatically drift themselves around corners lol. check the road, or check the way your driving.

a little more gentle on the steering perhaps... steering too quickly will cause plenty of body roll which will then cause oversteer...

Old tyres go really hard and lose their grip when they sit outside... how old are they on yours?

I was thinking the same thing. Cars don't just spin out by themselves

12-03-09, 15:46 GMT+10#14 i had the same problem with my car i coudnt take off at lights or go around roundabouts.. i narrowed it down to the following
****ty tires (got replaced next day) THIS IS MOST LIKELY YOUR PROBLEM
3.9's LSD
HD clutch
Driving style
it done it to me going around a corner too... long sweeping left hander and i just slid through the whole thing at 40 kays (rated 70 re yellow sign)
you say you got 14's thats probably your problem... check see how hard the tires are, the date on them (will be a 4 number string i.e 2607 (built 26th week of 07)) and you probably accelerated slightly through the corner...
if its really throwing the rear out at only 40 kays in the wet on a freeway offramp, the car isnt too safe, take it to a suspension mob, but my money is on your rear tires are crap

12-03-09, 16:31 GMT+10#15 lol at some of these posts... firstly guys i was driving normally thats why i **** myself and wasnt actually ready to be going sideways.
just driving onto the onramp and probably accelerated a little bit, the ass end just steps out, dont know how to put it other than that.
secondly the car is stock, thats why im asking about sway bars and this and that.
i guess its the tyres though, dont know how old they are as i've only recently bought the car. new ones are on the cards.
thanks for the help guys.

12-03-09, 16:35 GMT+10#16 My car does this in the wet when i bring the revs to the red part and take the clutch out quickly.
Also one time in the gravel i turned and pulled up the handbrake and it did this.
Confused? is my car also trying to kill me..
