Hi Here's the deal. I've been having a problem with my VL recently and finally it broke down while it was at the mechanics. I thought that's awesome it's going to get fixed. Well.. it's happening again. What happend is I started the car up fine, let it warm up and then I turned the car off. 5 Minutes later I returned to the car and it tried to start, coughs, splutters and then nothing. It cranked but it wouldnt start. I left it for 10minutes and then it started up again. I really need some help in dagnosing this problem as its starting to become more frequent. So what I know is that the mechanic tested it for spark and that was fine. There was no pressure in the Fuel Lines so the mechanic replaced the internal fuel pump but it's still happening. The car has a new battery, relativly new CAS, new Cap/Rotor/Leads/Spark Plugs and now i'm asking for suggestions. When I tried to restart the car Icouldn't hear the fuel pump priming, could this have anything to do with it? If you could throw a few ideas that would be appreciated, if i cant fix it by the end of the week i'll take it to an auto elec. Thanks

Its name is Christine.. I've had nothing but electrical issues with since i bought it. I've had it checked over by an auto elec recently and he came back with nothing but now this problem happens everytime i turn it off now after its warm if it doesnt start first go. Today i d/c the PT plug make sure it had a connection, i took off the lead at the back of coil and gave that a freshen up new terminals as one was looking pretty dodgy. Any other ideas??

It'll be the CAS or the CAS plug. Fuel pumps will prime for 5 secs when you switch to ignition, but while cranking/running the ECU needs to see a signal from the CAS in order for the pumps to run. It's a safety feature so the pumps stop in the event of an accident.

are the fuel pumps suposed to prime everytime you turn the car on? or do they only prime if the car hasnt been started for a certain time or.. ?? My CAS plug is looking a little suspect i'll check it out tomorrow

Dirty loom plug connections / corroded or broken wiring in the loom / and maybe that little power transistor on the side of the CAS?

there was a movie about a possessed car and its name was christine Ok, so I turned it off and left it for only 5minutes and the pumps wernt priming? Would that be a long enough time frame for them to not prime? Maybe I have a problem with sumthing disengaging the fuel system? I'll get some connection cleaner from work tomorrow and go over the connections with them and check for faulty wiring. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I only turned it off because I had to run inside and didnt want to leave it idling in the driveway. This was just one example. Another one, I drove to a friends house which was 15minutes away. 30 Minutes later we left, got no further than 300 - 400metres away and it cough and spluttered out've nowhere while driving and turned off on me, and then did the process above. Would crank, not prime and wouldn't fire until about 10 minutes later. Once the car is warm it does struggle a little to turn over, but if it doesnt fire first time then this problem occurs. It may be the timing/cam/fuel pressure i'm not sure but it only happens sometimes and random intervals which makes me think it's an electrical fault.

try switch contact cleaner on your c,a,s plug.give it good blast with cleaner and push the plug on and off a few times allso peel back the rubber boot and check the wires arent coming free of the pins. or if it looks really baddly coroded replace it with a new one. sounds like exactly the same problem to a car that came into work turned out to be the c,a,s plug.

I had similar symptoms with my N\A Daily. Ran fine Cold Coughed, Splutter, carried on when warm. Only started after i changed both fuel pumps.(sound familiar) heres the link, have a read. http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showth...ht=stalls+warm (http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=137472&highlight=stalls+warm) Turned out to be dodgy wiring plug at the fuel pumps. Its a Cylinder looking plug, With rubber dust\water plugs. All it needed was to be plugged in properly. Give it a go.

take the dizzy out while leaving the plugs in and turn the shaft by hand, you should hear each injector fire in turn as you rotate it and the pump should prime after each pulse. If the injectors dnt click or the pump dont prime its your CAS or ecu

Maybe the one-way valve fitting near the external pump is faulty allowing the fuel in the lines to drain back to the tank. After 5 mins after shutting the car off, the fuel may have drained back to tank from the lines to the engine, and when you start it up, the car coughs as the fuel is trying to fill the lines and race to the engine. Just as it stalls, the fuel may have been close to reaching engine. The valve may be intermittent and work sometimes and hold fuel there after this cough and splutter and stall. So when you go to start it after 10 minutes, it works just like new again.

i havent read other posts, just the first, so i dont know what others have suggested, but my first VL did this for a while, turned out to be a crappy relay on the fuel pump. you might not be that lucky but worth a try :P

waterpump dieing, leaking onto the crank angle sensor, crank angle sensor dies common vs vr problem. dunno if its the same with VL's though my dad used to be in the racv, he reckons he used to pour water over them as a quick fix and the car would start running again, but they dont last too long if you pour water over them every day...... good luck with it anyway
