well yesterday I finally put a boost controller on the RB25, and I put it on 10psi.
Last night I was driving around, giving it a bit and then next thing I know, I see a crapload of white smoke coming out the exhaust.
Then I still drove the car almost 2km down the road, so I really hope I didnt f*ck anything else by doing that?
I assume the turbo was already on its way out, because it always made a high pitched 'eeeeee' sound every now and then, and lately when I've started the car up it did it, AND that it blew only on 10psi.
Anyways, I've never looked down there, is anything else likely to be stuffed? What should I check?
I want this fixed asap, although, I want a turbo that can handle more psi than the stock one, and that will just bolt right in, without me having to change ANYTHING. I dont want it to mess with the stock ecu I have?
How much do you think I will have to spend on a new turbo, just a replacement, that can hold more boost, and bolts straight in? Nothing thats really heaps better and more expensive.
I really dont know much about all the different turbos around.

take off the intake and feel for shaft play in and out is really bad means thrust bearings are worn
turbo wise i'd just get another stocker in good nick if your only going 10 psi

well I wouldnt mind something that can take at least 17psi.
Not that I'd set it that high, but 14psi maybe, eventually

..its an rb25 turbo, they are ceramic inside and will eventually end up out your exhaust if u subject them to anything above 5-10 pound of boost. u will shound keep these turbos at stock boost...i just did a 25 conversion on my vl, stock boost, stock turbo..still spools up nice.

yah, I was told subjecting it to 12-13psi by quite a few people that thats not good, but 10psi should be be good. So mine was on 9 - 10.
Stock they are 7 or 8psi arent they?

The sponsor HyperGear now high flows turbos. With the hi flow you get to keep all your stock oil/water lines and keep your intercooler piping the same.

They're very hit and miss but I don't think I've ever heard of one blowing below 10psi on an RB25DET.
I ran mine for years at 13psi with 100hp gas on top and it didn't blow. Some go the first time they hit 12psi. Who knows?!
Replace it with something else or highflow that one but you'll be at the limit of the stock AFM and injectors before you start so remember these things as well.

21-02-09, 14:28 GMT+10#11 I PM'd HyperGear and they said they can rebuild/high-flow the turbo, and put the steel wheels in, 12 months warranty, for $800. Sounds pretty good. Anyone here done something like that?

These will not bolt straight up.
the flange is the same size but you will have trouble with intercooler pipes and the exhaust outlet s are different then standard.
Just get it high flowed with a steel wheel put in.
then run more boost.
your fuel system should support up to 14psi.

Yeah, I'm thinkin this would be best/easiest route.
Oh yeah, my turbo had about 100,000kms on it too, I suppose thats a fair bit of mileage for one of them?

21-02-09, 15:19 GMT+10#19 You cant take them past 1 bar of boost pressure which is roughly 14.7 PSI I thrashed mine on 14 pounds for years never had a problem. Its luck of the draw.

RB25 neos came from R34 GTTs so would be newer and are a bit different and i think a little larger than the R33 ones. The VG30 turbo is bigger than any RB25 turbo as it was on a 3L motor. i not sure of the differences between VG30 and RB30. alot of members on SAU use VG30 or RB25 neo turbos on RB20 and 25s if thats saying something. if yours was from 93/94 it would be s1.
an aftermarket turbo would be sh!t without a retune or aftermarket ecu
there is some good info in this thread....
