hey everyone. just looking at getting a brake upgrade all round. and was wondering if the ones to suit 99-05 commodores can be used on the vl? i know the fronts will be right as i already have seperate hubs and using vt brakes. but what about the rear? is there a way to use the rears onto a vl? and no i dont wanna put independant rear in the vl. any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers Matt.

You have to purchase the rear conversion kit for this application which costs about $650 plus freight as the handbrake set up is different. The offset is changed by about 5mm but try to avoid the other option of the welded spacer inside the late model disc as this can be dangerous.

In addition to the above, from VN onwards the handbrake setup was turned "upside down", so there is a little complication there. VB-VS rear calipers are a definate bolt on (calipers only, not the hadbrake mechanism). FYI, using these calipers isn't really an upgrade. I suggest getting your existing VL rear calipers rebuilt, braided steel hoses (all round), and using VN Group A rear discs. Same diameter (279mm), but they're twice as wide (20mm, as opposed to 10mm), and they're vented.

Yes and yes, as VN calipers are the same as VL.

Vented VN Gp A rear calipers are wider to fit over the vented disc and have fins cast into them like VLT front ones.

Oops....my bad. Re: LAZYASS's comment; is that correct? The welded brackets are a dangerous option? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I think he means a welded in ring which goes inside the VT rear disc to reduce the diameter to suit the smaller earlier style park brake shoes?

Ah yeah, that makes sense. Phew re: our conversation! Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

so in summary... can one of you guys confirm: vt-vz calipers bolt straight up and then it is a matter of finding the correct disk to fit? so realistically a vt or vz caliper could be fitted onto a rear disk of the correct diameter (for the calipers) with the correct inside size to suit Vl handbrake? Does such a disk exist? as a sort of upgrade? but still utalise the vl handbrake setup?

Thanks for the offer but I was thinking more on the smaller side, since 15s won't for over 330mm. I meant more the non HSV rear brakes, like just standard vt-vz single piston rear on a slightly bigger disk.
