Take gearbox off. Remove seal retainer. Fit new seal in retainer and refit. Replace gearbox.
I don't actually know if that's the steps to doing it in the car, I've only ever done it when I've had my engine on the stand. It's pretty simple though, there's just a retainer that bolts on to the back of the block with 6 bolts (maybe 8?) which holds the seal in.

for a vl 6 n/a or turbo
You need to remove the gear box, remove fly wheel/flex plate. Use a flat headed screw driver and hammer to break the seal out(don't slip and damage the sealing surface on the crank or you'll have bigger issues) or you might be able to use a L shaped screw driver to pull it out.
the other way is to remove the seal housing, but you may need to then remove the sump to get it all to seal back up. This is when it is easier to remove the motor from the bay.
Also when putting the new seal in, oil the matting surface with the crank. Some people will also use a sealer on the outer surface of the seal, like aviation form a gasket.
if it's a 5lt
Then it's a bit different as they use a two part seal and it's part of the rear bearing bridge, so you will need to remove the sump to get to it. best to ask some one else if it's a 5lt as i have not done one in a vl before.
hope this helps.

Isn't there little lip things on the retainer to hold the seal in? So if you try to pull the seal without removing the retainer you can't get it out?

Ah yeah, they're actually there to stop the seal going in too far, not to stop it coming out
