guys i just had a mate tell me that if you get 4 11 diff gears it could cut your top end speed by alot. just want to make sure if its true and if so how much we talking on a vn ss? and what are the benefits of 4 11 and the bad side of having them. thanks much appreciated.

4:11s are just a high ratio gearing and yes u will loose top speed, the benefits of 4:11s are quicker acceleration and the bad side is the car will be revving a lot higher than wat at would at certain speeds e.g 100klms your car would sit on say 2thou rpm, but with 4.11s it might sit on 2.5thou rpm.

Yes, as already said it will lower your top speed and rev higher. VN SS stock gears are 3.08, so 4.11s will be a lot higher reving than factory It all comes down to the driving you do, I would recommend the following... Mostly highway - 3.08 Mix of town and highway - 3.45-3.70 Mostly town + skids - 3.90-4.11

4:11 would just be for burn outs really and around the streets I guess...

overdriven cars are good with 4.1s, will make the car feel stronger everywhere.

its a four speed auto your not going to loose too much top end, i had 4.11's for a year, was fine for me reved at 2300@100kmph, unless your at the track when do you really need good top end anyway, low-mid range power is what you want for the street, id say go for teh 4.11's or 3.9's minimum which is what i have now there is **** all difference between 4.11's and 3.9's anyway

What they said ^^^ What i did when i wanted to get new diff gears ,was to work out exactly what RPM you will be most driving around at (cruise speed) with 4:11s etc (or with the whatever gears you want to use) You can work out your RPM's and "top speed" with whatever gears ..go here.... http://www.hotrodpitstop.com/tools.html#1 Then drive around in your car "now" at "that" RPM (obviously you may be in a lower gear not top) and see if you will be happy with your engine sitting at that constant RPM ? Or you can do it all the other way, using the Max cruise RPM you want, and work backwards to get the right diff gears to suit. Just may give you a bit more info about your gear choice before you buy ? 4 11s are **** if you ever want to drive on a freeway. Used to have them on my VS V6 manual Wagon, sitting on 110kms my revs were about 3500. Its cammed so that helped a bit with top end. Alot of fun to drive around the streets though, expect to start paying alot for petrol but.
