get a second oppinion. mastiffs are still growing till 2 years of age, i just found this on a dod breeding site It is better to wait until animals are at a mature age. This is to ensure they have grown to a suitable size for breeding. In general dogs and cats should not be bred before their second season this usually occurs around 12-14 months of age for cats, and from 12-18 months of age for dogs (depending on their size and breed). heres the site http://www.dogs.com.au/articles/192/dogbreeding.html heres another http://www.dogtron.com/book/continuing14.html im only telling you this for the dogs well being. I have french mastiff and bullarabs that i breed. my mates bandog got to his pitty bitch on her first season causing her to prolaps during the day while he was at work, she dehidrated and died at the vets. Another mates ridgback was breed at 16 months on her second season and she was still imature and killed all 3 pups, she was mated again a few years later and had 16 healthy puppy that all survived.

Im a registered breeder (aussie bulldogs), If any pup comes into season @ 6 months old (some times they wait till later), you skip that and possibly even the next season then go on the third. 18 months is a minimum. Too much stress on the bitch to breed from so young. Like a 10yr old having kids. If you want good healthy litters then get someone to mate using A-I, that way you have better chance of pregnancy and less chance of the dog and bitch punching the suitcase out of each other. Do it on the 7th day of bleeding. As far as pups dying, too many people leave it up to the mum. They can squash, eat, push out in the cold or whatever. You need to be there round the clock for the first week at least. Set the telly and the computer up in the whelping room and camp for a week. I havent lost a pup yet.

Oh ok. My vet must now much about breeding then. I just wanted to give her a litter before i got he desexed. I Know a bit about breeding dogs as my mum breeds chihuahua's so i know all about the puppy part. I was only thinking about breeding he with a smaller dog like a staffy or something so the pups wont be as big cos my mum told me that the male should be smaler than the female so there is less strain on the female as the pups will be smaller. Thanks for the advice. cheers laura
