hi just fixed the head on my vlt, and the car shows a higher temp than before, it shows one line over half, my mechanic said the gauge is reading hotter than it really is, when you open the bonnet the hoses arent really that hot you can hold onto to it no problem, the car has a new thermostat put in it. the car isnt drinking any water at all. any guesses? thanks

If you're confident that the cooling system is working ok, water pump ok? Had the radiator cleaned out etc then you could probably guess the temp sensor or gauge are playing up....?

When you say 'water' I hope you mean coolant. When the head was repaired, what was done to it? Tell the mechanic to use a temp gun to get a true reading. Perhaps the gasket was not installed correctly, possibly blocking some galleries. The mechanic is saying the temp gauge is reading hotter than what it is, however you have to take into account that with recent changes to the car the temp guage has remained static, it has not changed - if its reading hotter than before, and its the same unit, then there sounds like there is an issue.

got a gtr head gasket put in and a bit of a clean up, i also got a new thermo stat, flush and a new sender. the radiator is a 2 core and about 1 year old. when i was cruising around all day for cruise for charity it was showing a bit over half. if i go for a quick spin itll go 1 line over half.i pulled over and checked my radiator and hoses and they felt cool. i let it run for 5min when i got back and it dropped a bit. just put another gauge and same reading. took it to a radiator shop, they put a laser reader on the radiator and hoses and they told me its no way hot as it shows on the dash, no air in the radiator either, dont know what to do next???? its using no coolant radiator and reserve bottle are full

get an aftermarket gauge, u cant rely on the factory gauge at all, and why the need for a GTR HG

^^ yeh I was thinking the same thing, Why do u need a gtr head gasket?? Also had the exactly the same problem when I first bought my VLT. Ended up being a resistor in the factory gauge that made it jump a bar. This was after having the radiator core flushed, new thermostats and new senser. Defently put a aftermarket gauge in for temp, Mine sits on about 85 - 90deg
