my vl has a very bad clunking sound over bumps, ive stopped driving it cos its freaking me out. first i thought it was a ball joint, so i jacked it up and levered under the tyre and the ball joint didnt have any slop. when you release the leverage you can hear the clunk. it sounds like its coming from the spring or shock. anyone else had this problem? i did have trouble when i certified it as the previous front springs bottomed out and was trying to puch the strut through the tower. so i put new springs in it and maybe the shock has finally given up due to the harsh stiff ride with 19s and all??? cheers guys Matt. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Had this problem on my Calais Matt, A loud knock over bumps in those usually means that nobody put oil in the strut tubes before fitting the insert, common item to forget and makes a horrible noise.

Not so much a broken strut as a worn out strut. Eventually they make noise when they're ready to be replaced. While we are on the topic of front suspension knocks and clunks could anyone tell me whats wrong with mine? As I steer, like doing a u-turn or steering on the spot It'll clunk. And also If I pull up at a set of lights and slowly let the car roll backwards then touch the brakes it will clunk. It even clunks when you jack the front end up. Mind you I have all new bushes in the front and new inserts.

Possibly bearing plates? My magna does the same with brand new front shocks, it's the only thing left that I haven't tried.
