I recently purchased a new VLT.Looked the goods plenty of power yada yada yada. Went to drive home to find it started to overheat 80km's down the road. Surely you start to suspect a head gasket. After a new gasket, pressure testing and a second opinion on a pressure test and a decking it was put back together and once again road tested. All appeared good untill it was put on high boost. Sure enough after new oils coolants head checks and gaskets i had a milkshake on my hands again. The head was removed and we then found found that the original turbo block had split in the 6th bore from top to bottom. F****N spweing .PRETTY IMPRESSIVE SPLIT THOU! So a new car with a previous problem. Thousands of dollars later the engine is now getting transplanted into another A8 block. Any one had there block split like this before. It had 500hp at the rears running pump fuel. Block had only been bored 20thou and 5k old. Any ideas why this happened.? Anything i should do differently in the rebuilt? What sort of run in do you guys suggest any ideas guys? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Get a pic up! Could be from a previous heat issue, could be a poor casting, there are plenty of reasons why they can split!

Looks like a weak spot in the bore, only 20thou over? Still plenty of meat there! I think overheating may have caused the problem + big boost wouldn't help.

i think its been getting steam cleaned by the water coming in to the bore

most likely a casting problem from factory, that crack is very straight and once it was bored out it pushed its Integrety a bit far

mate this happend to me verry simular. thought id blown a head gasket so i changed head and gasket and slamed it back together only to notice it was stil ****ed, any how i puller the engine out and striped it to find the bore had split but in number 3 cylender..........the cause was that the engine filled so fast with water that it hydraulicked (spelling) lol and the pressure had no where to go and it found the weakest point that being the thinest wall, ah well na block fixed the problem....transplanted it all over

500rwhp on pump 98? How much boost was this thing subject to? Do you know the AFR's? Thats a tad over 370rwkw on pump fuel, sounds sus as to me. Sounds like too much boost / compression on pump fuel has killed it and its found the weakest link in the cylinder. I once had a car that had too much compression and blew its guts all over the road... although it was a little more catastrophic than yours. Just my thoughts...

I didnt do the run i purchased it a week after it had been on the dyno. I was told it wass running 26psi it has Ross Forged pistons, Forged scat rods, Acl race bearings, GTR N1 oil pump, Slightly ported head, stage 2 cam tech cam GTR springs. AVO high flow low mount exhaust manifold, Garrett GT35/40 ported wastegate 13psi actuator, Custom 3inch dump into 3inch high flow exhaust. Slightly portly NA runners matched to the head, Rajab racing inlet manifold, EL throttle body, Rajab racing Garrett intercooler 3 inch end tanks custom piping. 850cc injectors, SX fuel reg, PFI high flow fuel rail, Bosch motor sport 044 fuel pump, 600hp walbro intank lift pump, Motor sport fuel filter. Motec M48, 3 bar map sensor 7000 RPM rev limiter. Its all going back into a new block. Its been a bloody expensive excersise this purchase... I've heard of many methods of running in but has anyone got any ideas on whats best. ???

Sounds like it has overheated or been over boosted in the past, pretty unlucky, these blocks usually cop an atom bomb.

That's big boost for pump fuel, did your manifold glow after driving it?
