My car usually dropped inoto first when taken off abit too quick and reved real high before changiTn into 2nd with a big kick, this happened a 3rd time and it died. he gearbox needs service i know but why isnt it kicking over anymore, i checked the book and checked fuel pump and its not squirting into carby, taken it out and my father checked it with me and all seems to be fine when he pushes the lil lever and fuel squirts??? what can be doing this, just get a new fuel pump? or is it something else, could pipe to carby get blocked?? need some help as i have just go it registered and cant afford to sell and get a VL cheers Corey if you have msn and can help would be evenbetter... From memory the lever on the pump is actuated by an eccentric cam/lobe at the front of the crank. maybe the pump arm is bent and it is not hitting this cam? Or the pump arm has been fitted under the cam not on top of it.... Just a few thoughts... 1. With the pump fitted to the engine again and the line to the carb disconnected does it pump fuel while the car is cranking? If is doesn't but will buy hand, that tells me it is not hitting the cam/lobe I metioned above. if it does then the line to the carb is blocked.... (blow through it) OR the float level on the carb is wrong OR the inlet needle and seat in the carb is blocked shut... My $0.2's worth.

it does by hand but doesnt want to kick over when it on..when i try kickin it over fuel doesnt seem to go through though, me old man loosened up to the bolt behind pump and no fuel leaks out soo im guessing the pump but i will float level after school lol and for the inlet needle no idea lol il have to look that up haha thanks again man appreciate it

yeh prob, thats what you get with a free car hahah nah man not keen, rather save the money for a VL, dont have much as still in school for a lil while longer.. thanks for the offer man melbourne a bit far lol and BPR it doesnt squirt, i put it back in and no squirt soo gonna try getting another fuel pump..just gona make sure by spraying some fuel into carby later on too see whether its just that Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

If it pumps by hand but not when winding engine over ur cam lobe could be f ucked.

Probably, il try getting a fuel pump off neighbour to see if it is. If it works il get new pump and if not what can i do.?

its not a blockage to carby..tried squirting fuel into carby and there is no vacumm..i dont want to take carby apart cauz i reckon il get it all stuffed up but il see anyways, not too sure about lobe but getting neighbour to help check that for us he should know something..

This will be the last I comment on this, but if the pump was pumping into the carby float bowl it would still squirt fuel reqardless if there was manifold vaccum... (have you ever seen a carb squirt fuel when the engine is switched off?? Yes it does!!) Did you take off the fuel line at the carby and spin the engine over with the pump connected to the car? Best of luck

if u think it's the fuel pump or the cam on the cam, u can get a cheap electric CARBY fuel pump for bugger all get steel plate gasket paper and cut the metal to cover the hole fit the electric pump and there u go just get rid of the mechanical pump, and yes the carb should squirt fuel with the engine off but it wont do that with the fuel bowl empty, what ever you do don't try dismatling a carby when u don't know what ur doing because there not very easy and there are spings and **** everywhere

Do as PBR recommends, take the fuel line off the carby and crank the car, if fuel is coming out of the line then its not your pump. Have you checked spark? Check spark on both sides of the coil, and to the dizzy. take off a lead and check if your getting spark (arc when cranking the car) check your fuses too. Mick

nah its not the fuel pump i already tried my neighbours one he had spare n its not it.. it was my timing gear half the teeth snapped :s but yeh is there any other way of takin out timing gear without removing crank??

yes u remove the cam, there a press fit item pretty common as they are made out like a pressed wood, u can but a kit from a holden dealer, but if you get it separatly i think u can get an alloy gear instead of the wood.

pressed wood? never heard of it... in an engine application anyway..

sorry it's like a fibre pressed wood really common on 202 and 186 timing gears on the cam shaft not the crank, i took this from a hq racing web site ,The timing gears have been upgraded from fibre to steel helicals and fail after a grueling 3000 race kilometers at the top end of the field. A crack will develop around the hub. Sounds like a sharp tinkling noise at the front just before the timing cover sheds alloy into the crankshaft bearings from contact by the broken cam gear.

^^^ You are spot on... done to keep drivetrain noise down.
