You only have 15kw more and a heap of weight in the Stato you it will never be a nimble VL. Its not that the 5.0 is slow, its probably that the 3.8 eco is good but if you tweak both the V8 is a beast.

Was the VS manual? Live axle? The weight difference would be a huge factor, and the power difference is little.
Crack them open, and the story will be totally different. The ol' Five-ohh has a fair bit more potential than the 3.8

It has been covered many times, but if you can't search here is my standard answer for these threads...
Headers, exhaust, intake, 71mm throttle body (yella terra from ebay), and tune will make around 200kw at the flywheel
3.45 diff gears for a nice to drive auto, or 3.7 if you don't mind the high revs at highway speeds
If you are looking for more power than that, start saving for a supercharger and the extra parts that you will break
Just remember the Caprice is a heavy luxury car... making it quick will be expensive
Have a read

yer there very heavy cars. i drove a hsv caprice with the 355 215i motor and that was slow as also and the have extractors and crap from the factory. there not race cars but ey mate so done expect it to be

superchargeing or stroking is the only way to make a holden engine go anygood.

they're all corked up from the factory to meet all the guidlines in place, dont expect too much. As other have said spent a bit of $$$ to open her up and it will be moving faster in no time

i so agree with ya mate.. open the whole thing up intake exhaust extractors all that **** .. then if u wana start pullin numbers... cam heads... massive numbers stroking (my fav) supercharging or the rare turbo charge on 5 ltrs

01-08-08, 01:12 GMT+10#10 caprice is very heavy with the irs and all the luxo items its like a full carload of ppl heavier than a vs exec v6. just chuck some boltons on and it will show its true potential.

01-08-08, 02:02 GMT+10#11 the problem is your driving a statesman, which is a heavy old girl, no wonder it seems like it goes like a pos. not meant for performance, meant for comfort

01-08-08, 02:17 GMT+10#12 yeah my senator was pretty slaggy, supercharge it :P if u have the funds

01-08-08, 02:27 GMT+10#13 Just get rid of the piece of sh1t manifolds on them cause unless your forcing air down its throat with a supercharger or turbo, they will kill and gains you make by stroking, camming and doing heads on them. If you leave it stock manifold no matter what mods you do to it in NA form youll struggle to push anything more than 185rwkw with it!

01-08-08, 23:08 GMT+10#14 Just chucked a stock exhaust back on my car from a 2 1/2 inch (with usual mods like cam, heads, intake, pacies etc etc), really can't be bothered tip toeing around the cops anymore and the power and torque loss, as well as high RPM breathing is really noticeable. Then you think standard 5.0 ltr has little timing, crap exhaust manifolds and pipes, low profile cams etc etc no wonder they don't get up and move too well. Have you decided on any mods yet?

02-08-08, 14:27 GMT+10#15 the big statos are pretty slow in stock form, since ive put 3.9's, 2800rpm stall, rebuilt and shiftkitted auto, exhaust and "modified cat" i can keep up or beat lighter 5L's like in vns n stuff no problems, just need to open them up like all the other guys have said just depends on your budget
a few more months and there will be a quick stato coming out to play hehe

02-08-08, 14:45 GMT+10#16 They are probably the best engine ever built in Australia, how many Bathursts did they win? Twin turbo it if you need more power.

02-08-08, 20:11 GMT+10#17 ???? yeah your right they are a heavier car, i pulled the auto out and put a manual in.... they weight difference from the auto to the manual is unbelievable, the auto weighed like 100kg more than the manual.
I.M.O And all depends on how the motors been looked after over the years ,servicing, maintainance etc..., mine was an ex government car, all service history etc...
I had a 3" high flow sports exhaust fitted, T5 5 spd manual converted into it, K+N filter, and got the chip tuned for max performance, stock diff gears, and believe it or not it gives my brother inlaws VY SS gen3 auto a real good run for his money.. put it this way, he could hardly keep up to me..i did'nt flog him, but he could'nt catch me either, The manual in the stato makes a heap of difference, has alot more go than the auto.
i have'nt done much to the motor at all, just the manual and tuned the chip, so it has'nt cost too much for some extra power.

02-08-08, 21:37 GMT+10#18 the answer is no.. with little work they can go hard...
its just that your dealing with a car thats designed for comfort rather then speed or performance..
driving a std statesman in an auto and driving a vp exec with a t5 is a big difference in many ways.. if you get a right combo from diff to suspension to gearing and engine, you can make them go
i use to know of a vt s1 with a small cam and the right combos.. this thing munched all the 304 ss's and most ls1's easily..

03-08-08, 14:59 GMT+10#19 Well atm i just slap some 20z on it..i think i mite need to get a boat lisence soon hehehe..but its off the road for the following mods:
-Thermo Fans (get rid of the heavy cllutch fan)
-Extractors/ straight pipes.
-Rebuilt Diff..with 3.9s or 4.11s Dunno which ones.
-Shift Kit & Chipped
Hopefully with these mods i get her up and going and i was also thinkin about bigger thrrole body like a 90mm..
So what do u guys reckon???????

03-08-08, 15:12 GMT+10#20 that sounds good.. should be less sluggish with that.. im just thinking about the tb.. because i think the banana manifold might still be too restrictive and defeat the purpose of the 90 ml tb..
lol... i dont think 20z will help
