if your doing that then do it right. balancer can be degrees off, ESPECIALLY if its the old balancer and its spun on the rubber. Im lost ... how can your cam be set if you dont have the cam / bottom end set up ?

if youve got the head off its simple, just turn the engine over by hand until cylinder # 1 (closest to radiator) is at the very top of its stroke. When the head is on there i stick a screwdriver in the spark plug hole and wait till it gets to its highest point as you turn the engine

if the head is on then the only other thing you have to do is make sure the dot on the cam gear is pointing straight up

Your not giving enough info man. Is it an adjustable cam gear ? is the engine assembled ? is the head on the block ..... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

according to that thread ^^ its just a matter of linning up the balancer to the first mark and lining the cam gear straight up? I just put it to that first mark and piston 1 and 6 are both up.. thanx

Dude your not listening or reading ... balancers can move and are not 100% accurate. If your dialing a cam and relying on the balancer to give you the correct timing your going to end with an engine not set up correct. Ive said my part. do what u want now Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Your original question asked how to get the the bottom end to TDC ( piston # 1) I told you how...just turn it over until the piston is at the top. So why the hell are you talking about the cam gear when the head isnt even on the engine?? If your trying to work out how to set the cam timing (even though youve said the cam is set already) once your head goes back on then thats a whole different procedure, listen to psiwog he knows his ****. What sarcasm? Youve been told a few times now on how to do it!!

If you dont have the balancer on the easiest and simplest way is to align the mark on the front of the lower timing gear to the marlk on the oil pump housing. Then set the cam mark to top, fit the belt with a count of 53 teeth between marks from the LHS from top to bottom. Then tighten the tensioner. Very simple!

X 2 Oh I wasnt being scarcastic you just keep changing what you were asking so it made it hard. Good luck with it. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Seeing as he has the head off id say the simplest way is to look at it lol...then put the head on and set the cam mark to top as Yep-boost said above.
