i have searched for this but havent found a solid answer yet so iv gotta quesion
once converted to turbo how long has everyones MF5 held up and under what boost
im not expectin mine to last long but to get a rough idea would be great
thanks
They love it lol. I've been giving mine a heap of ****, 12-14psi with a hiflow turbo and its still holding up really well. The boxes are pretty ****, they get crunchy and annoying but mine hasnt blown yet.
It will last a while if you don't go too nuts with the power and do skids all the time depending on its current condition
ITs like anything really. If you drive it and thrash the cnut it will break. If you drive careful it should last.
Treat your car like a turd, and it will do the same to you.
i guess it ll depends on you luck of the draw, some people can get a great box or motor that will last yonks with some serious power where others will give them never ending grief. the mf5 is almsot exactly the same as the rb20det gearbox just without the extra syncro and they can be a pretty strong box if driven correctly.
they dont last.. i went threw 2 of them.. once on the dyno wen motor was first built.. smashed it to 1000 pieces... then the second within a month of gettn the car on the road.. and NO before people ask were u flogging it.. the car was being ran in.. i blew the second gear box before 1000kms.. not one burnout. launch or anything.. was super careful.. and the gear box blew.. oh and the car was on 7psi coz the it was being ran in... just my expeirences wit MF5..
my mates lasted a fairly long time running the car at mostly 12-14psi with lots of boosting and a fair few skids. even a few occasions it was at something like 16. that was untill he was up to 4th gear in a massive skid...
it would depend on what the box has been through before aswell no?
Its the torque that kills them not the power. Have a look at the RB20DET gearboxes - theyre basicly the same box but with dual syncros. Can handle some power but the RB20 isnt exactly a torque monster
As everyone has said treat it with respect and it will look after you as long as your power isn't too ridiculous. I've got an MF5, been running behind my converted NA for about a year, runs 11psi all day every day. It is however a standard T3 so the powers not massive, around 180rwkw i'd say. 3rd and 5th are pretty damn noisy now though, not really sure whether that's a function of the conversion as they were a little noisy before. I'm sure it hasn't helped though.
If your box is a bit notchy throw some of that Nulon gearbox oil additive up it. Mine used to be a bit notchy in 2nd when cold, with that stuff in it it's super smooth in every gear, even cold. Note: 'super smooth' by VL standards, it's not an audi.
mines has lasted around 2years, and from day one it was a very noisy box, input shaft bearing was gone and some others too, wasnt untill i hit the strip and started flat shifting every gear that it started to whine in 2nd 3rd and 4th ran a 14.3 with about 200hp
put any sort of boost through it and one day youl go to drop the clutch or put your foot down in 3rd 4th or 5th and it will just go bang, but if you treat it easy on stock boost you can get them to last a a while
i blew the first one, the **** be4 me thrashed it, noisy when i got it, next mf5 is doing well, 15 psi, with some work to the motor also, and its fine, just dont go being hetick and thrashing first gear, the sick chrip of the change kills the gear box, treat it nice and it will last you, flog it for its life, it will blow.

lulz...
treat it nice? NO! Gearboxes are evil they must be punished!!
Especially autos. They must be redlined in neutral and dropped into drive continually until they die.
And then you have to convert to manual.
