Hey just wanted to know, are exhaust cut offs illegal or are they legal?
if you dont know what a cut off is, its a Y thatgoes inline the exhaust, usualy just after the extractors or pretty much werever u want, one side is open which is the normally open side, this goes into the main exhaust system, the other end of the Y goes to the atmosphere and has a flap inside, either manually operated or electrically operated by a little motor, its like a butterfly valve....
when you pull the flap, its just instanting chopping the exhaust off and having no exhaust at the point where the Y is connected so its realy loud, bypassing mufflers and hotdogs etc, when you close it, factory stock sound or much quieter....
i wana know, is this illegal? ferraris n sh!t have em, ever seen a ferrari quiet as a mouse while its parking and then when it takes off down the road it sounds like a cyclone 2 blocks away?
so yea i wana know if this is illegal or not, guess it wouldnt be as they sell em on rocketindustries so like yea....

oh right so its illegal, but like whats so illegal about it? im not trying to get flamed but probably will but im curious to know.... and would be pretty cool ahha
it be like a screamer pipe on a N/A!

and thats where the problem begins.
by allowing a bypass in the exhaust it changes the exhaust properties (it bypasses the catalytic converter for one), and therefore is illegal on the street, be it open or closed when the cops stop you.
might be able to make it legal if it is not able to be opened from inside the car, but that kinda kills the point.
there was a thread on here a few weeks ago about the same thing, i'll try and dig it out

I can't see the problem if you had it switching between a stock exhaust and a sports exhaust, but if it's switching to an exhaust that vents out under the car with no mufflers then it will be an issue

it will be AFTER the cat (i aint got a spare 10gz) and before the 1st muffler.... like hell it cant be THAT loud, its a stock exhaust system with pacemaker extractors... and the cutoff will be a 50mm square tube about 100mm long
and what your talking bout King-3l is the sports exhaust at the back, aka 5inch cannon, it has flannges inside that open up n sh!t to make it loud or not loud, im not putting a cannon onmy vl!

That would be cool if was on a 400hp V8… but it will sound terrible on an NA 3L

ease up guys, this is actually a decent idea.
But yes it is illegal. It will be way too loud, and your exhaust must exit 300mm past the last opening rear window.
But lets say you were a serious drag racer, it would be quite effective. Run nice and safe dB on the street, then when it gets serious open the exhaust valve to allow the exhaust to exit a less restrictive route.
but dont do it on your NA 3L.... Its just lame.

But for a regular car (an auto N/a VL, nonetheless), no. Just no.

So pretty much have no back pressure so the car has even less performance then it did before but at least it will have hektic sik zorst sound huh... it will sound like faggotory on an n/a... when you drive down the street people will just hear the sound of a constipated cow and facepalm themselves and say to the person next to them "wow that cunts a faggot try-hard"
Just do it, except cut a hole in the floor and have the Y piece entering the cabin, it will either make the interior catch on fire so you burn to death or you will die of CO2 poisoning.

so wait, if you have a hiflow cat and a muffler, if i take the muffer off and just have the 3inc going to the end...
so its just 3inc from the turbo to the hiflow cat. and 3inc all the way to the end .. so is that illegal ?

23-06-08, 15:30 GMT+10#13 It has to pass the EPA noice level requirements. And I'm going to hazard a guess that that won't.

23-06-08, 15:52 GMT+10#15 If its to a legal exhaust system, then yes it would be legal, but the fact that it dumps into an illegal system, if it can be controlled while the car is operating, it will be illegal.
Think about it this way, what happens if you've got a nos system connected, whether or not your using it, it is illegal because it CAN be used.

23-06-08, 16:26 GMT+10#16 It was me that made the other thead on these...
except i was going to use one to make my exhaust quieter for when i'm coming home at 3am and bugging my neighbours...
not louder to attract more defects.
i think the most important question... the one being overlooked so-far in this thread is why the hell would you want your virtually stock NA to be louder...
i have one, trust me, an NA with too big an exhaust sounds like a baby being hit with a cat, not good.
and in my experience it will run smoother with a little bit of back pressure anyway so it's hardley going to improve performance...
you really have nothing to gain from this except a defect. which in your circumstances would write off your car as soon as they see your subs.
have a lovely day.

23-06-08, 16:28 GMT+10#17 Chop it off then fabricate more piping so the fumes release inside the cabin (you'll also need to chop another hole into ya car to allow the fumes to enter)...
That's the only way you can get it EPA friendly...
Then take yourself on a nice long cruise

23-06-08, 17:50 GMT+10#18 ok heres what i found
N/a with extractors and nothing else past the extractors, no cat, nuffin, im gona compare it to a VK brocky that i was listening to, the n/a is not louder, like the vk brocky was one mean ***n thing and had some work done to it, but the n/a with tractors only sounded like a normal v8, just a tiny bit louder..
N/a with extractors and everything else except for the last bit of exhaust which includes the muffer sounds like a VX SS with a 3 1/2 inch dual exhaust and extractors, like a medium v8 loudness but smooooooth
so0o0o0o imma see how far that is and maybe ill just leave the last bit off, my vl sounds like what it is, a sh1tter!
and im put off by the whole exhaust cut off thing, cbf doin all the work ahhah
and btw, the one from rocketindustries is only 2" in diameter so nuffin too big and would probably want 8 of em, one on each chamber ahhahaha

23-06-08, 21:22 GMT+10#20 I think this site went downhill on the 11-08-07.
Please, take Dazza's advice. The only thing I will add is, take a few boxes of valium to make sure the job is done right.
Before you kill yourself, give me my fucking money. Or keep it and buy some razors.
You are a poor, dumb excuse for a teenager.
Die. Please, oh please, die.
