Saw on the news tonight the government is looking at bringing in compulsary car insurance in New Zealand. They think this will target the young car enthuest's in regards to having non legal cars abd driving convictions etc.. I think its a good idea as it safe guards your car from people who other wise would of had no insurance etc in a accident. Its been compulsary like in UK for yrs..It said at the mo a quarter of drivers dont have insurance at all. So it mite cost alot of money but least people will be covered... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Its been compulsary like in UK for yrs I agree it is a good idea. My mates VK was written off because of an uninsured driver and it took him ages to get the money back. Had to keep dragging her back through court to get the money. I believe it is actually compulsary in most countries these days... once again NZ is a little behind. The people that aren't going to like it is the people that it's targeting tho. All those that have sh!t boxes and don't care if their car gets written off. Rant over, J

Bloody good idea I reckon. I'm not sure why they're saying its going to cost so much. Third party is the cheapest insurance you get. Doesn't matter what type of car you have, the insurance only covers the cars/property that you hit.

As far as I can see it's because it gives too much control to the insurance companies so they can pretty much charge what they want, because we would have to buy it. I was gonna comment in Mike's thread about the exhausts about this, but I forgot I thought I should add that I do think everyone should have insurance.. I'm not someone that the law is targetting, just someone who would be effected by it. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I think its a brilliant idea, for those already insured it should not cost any more, but the price will climb sharply for the bad eggs who keep crashing, hopefully making drivers pay more attention to the road and less on other distractions.

It'd ne nice if that was how it would work, but insurance companies are businesses, sure with more customers they 'could' lower the costs and run with the same profit, but that's not how business works, they're there for the profit, not because they want to cover everyone's ****ups. But yes, the bad eggs, they're whining saying 'but then I'm effectively not allowed to drive!', and to that, we say STOP DRIVING LIKE AN IDIOT.

I have full on both my cars. I'm not really changing my driving habits cause of petrol, but it is annoying that the petrol companies are absolutely raking it in, and most of the cost of it at the pump is tax (do we wear roads out twice as fast as before just cause oil costs twice as much?)

Agreed that Insurance is a business, but with so many of them out there they still need to be competitive to attract customers, even now they favour people with insurance history and no claims bonuses. Irontusk; do you get people hassing you saying you should buy a small car too?

And yeah they will always have competition, premiums wouldn't just keep going up, but they would rise just that bit as not having it wouldn't be an option for them to compete with.

I'm all for it. I've been crashed into (lightly) 3 times and non of them had insurance. Vero have been awesome though, they just tell you to go get your car fixed and they follow up with the other party to recover their costs

im going to court shortly for a lady who pranged me, un-insured and denying anything to do with it, now i have to go on behalf of IAG whilst they spend time and money prosecuting her to recover costs. If she had 3rd party it would have been over within a week. THis was november last year. If this happens 100 times in a year it costs the rest of us in premiums. bring on compulsary over the next 5 years the increased cost will out weigh what full premiums will have cost. Rhys

In 1980 is was less than $25 a barrel! And the petrol companies really only make a few cents at most from each litre of fuel they sell, they make their profits from the shear number of litres sold, so yeah they rake it in but if they were to lower their profit margin to zero it still wouldnt drop the price of petrol much... IF they had their choice petrol would be back down to $1- they would sell far more petrol and could make more profit of each litre!

hsvhel, that is something I didn't think of, insurance companies wouldn't have to put so much resources into chasing people who don't have insurance. There is a huge amount of tax on petrol.. And calais3l, that is a very good point, I was talking to my dad a while ago and when he was my age he was spending atleast as much of his pay (% wise) on petrol as I do now, that was 30 years ago.

Petrol still isnt as expensive (adjusted for inflation) as it was during the 70's oil crisis and the 1980s energy crisis. People have short memorys when it comes to their wallets.
