Ive had a quick search around and havent found anything really realting to this. VL Berlina 3L, Manual, N/A, Standard While driving home from Wellington I noticed smoke was slowly rising up in front of my dash, we'd travelled about 150kms upto this point. But I only noticed the smoke when the evening sun was shining through the car. It was quite faint and odourless. I stopped and pulled off the gear stick boot and more smoke came out from under this. Though once stopped the smoke also stopped, it only seemed to start up when I approached about 80kmh+. I drove home another 200kms odd, no problem, still driving around, no problems. With the boot off I noticed a kinda friction sound when I let the clutch out? Any ideas? Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

It sounds like it could be clutch though you would definately have the clutch smell in the car (similar to when you jam the brakes on a couple of times). Nothings leaking? Check water and oil levels and see around the back of the engine / gearbox is you can see if anything has leaked. As I said, all signs point to clutch but you would smell it for sure.

yeah thats what i thought was interesting, it should have a smell. i will have a good look around the back of the engine tomorrow but i had it up on a hoist on monday and the guy said he couldnt see any sign of leaks. and didnt know what was up, though he was only having a quick look see for me. may take it in and get it checked properly.

its probably your rear main seal leaking engine oil. It happened to me ince when i put about 1litre too much oil in. Once i drained the oil the problem was fixed

Mine use to do it as well. Never worried about it...

What sort of oil do you have in your gearbox? Could be burning oil if its too thin, although you'd definately smell it.

The exact same thing happens to me in my N/A 5 speed berlina, noticed it prob 8 months ago but havent done anything about it, mainly cause it was ordorless. Nothign has gone wrong. But would like to know why it happens Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
