I'm in the process of making moulds up for casting a clear timing belt cover (show off the adjustable cam gear and keep the cops happy) Need a little bit of input though. Obviously there's a bit of heat involved with where these sit, despite the fan being directly in front. I have to ensure that a) the materials I use won't discolour with heat, and b) they wont melt over my timing belt! What kind of heat tolerences will I need to aim for i.e how hot will the cover get? Also, would any one be keen if these come out a treat and prove themselves resiliant? ( I'd run one on my own car for at least a month under some fairly heavy driving to ensure they didn't warp/melt/discolour...)
Cheers INFLYT. Went out today and picked up the resin. Apparently will withstand up to 100 degrees no problems. Discoloration will be minimal, however impossible to completely avoid, so will but the slightest grey tint in the resin to combat even the slightest yellowing. PSI WOG is right, won't help with cops, but still a good way to show off the motor and stop the possibility of anything nasty getting caught up in my timing belt. Plus haven't seen it done before so will be a bit defferent. Got the idea from an RB26 clear cover. Will begin moulds tonight, should have a test cover knocked out by the weekend, and will post pics to get your input for an initail small run.
Yea, I've thought about it a few times. I started on the moulds last night. I always wandered why it hadn't been done before, it seemed pretty simple. However I now know why - it's a bugger of a thing to accurately mould! Still, I'm a stubborn prick so I'll figure it out.
i actually thought about this a while ago when i came across the RB26 ones.
i quickly put it in the too hard basket though.
if you get them done and they withstand the heat, then i might be interested in getting one.
