any ideas why my trans would jump between gears, under acceleration it jumps down say from 4 to 2 at like 80 odd ks then when overdrive engaged shifts fine but wont select 4th

Welcome to automatic transmissions. To me it sounds like the car is behaving perfectly normal. The automatic selects the best gear for the amount of load the engine is given. Under heavy throttle it will drop down to an appropriate gear. The pwr button locks out 4th gear so thats why when its on you can't get into 4th.

Sounds to me someone has modded your detent switch to be way too touchy. lay down in your car where your feet would go and look up under your dash where your go go peddle is, you will see a bar comming out and when your put your foot down it hits and moves it, That tells the auto computer when you have your foot down and when to drop back gears. people put tape over them to make them fatter, So it hits sooner, so it dropps back gears soon/more often. Maybe some one went nuts on yours?
