Rods on series two motors are weaker. With forged goodies, 1000hp boosted is not a hard task (from an engineering perspective)
lextreme.com and planetsoarer.com would be good for a look

^^^^Thats correct, the 1uz with cast ally fuel rails have weaker rods. Not uncommon for guys to be running between 400-500hp on standard engine untouched, obviuosly good tuning here is a must as they have 10.5:1 comp ratio.

so with a snail strapped to the side of it, and a good tune it sounds like they would be able to handle 400-450hp at the wheels?

easy. One guy over here was running about 470rwhp on the weaker engine, but it let a few rods go so that stuffed it.Another guy has a celica gt4 with twin turbo and a m90 supercharger stuck to it.Both these engines are untouched internally.
This is the turbo i was going to run on mine but no will down grade to a 35/40.Will take it easily

good strong little motor
FWIW it comes as a 700x700x700 cube (so it will fit EASILY into a commodore - plenty been done too check lextreme.com)
yes justen has a Celica GT4 (called GT8) which was converted to RWD with a 1UZ and twin turbos and soon to be added supercharger goodness.
theres also a fellow who is setting one up in a TA22 Celica with a big single and 4wd running rear from an R32 skyline
the power thats available out of these by strapping onto internally stock motors the most i've seen was by some folks in WA in a yellow RA28 Celica which IIRC was 1100hp.
have a cruise around lextreme.com all your questions will be answered there. the motor is an engineering marvel and well loved by lots of conversioners

22-05-08, 10:53 GMT+10#12 a ls conversion would cost alot more than a 1uz,may even be able to stick atleast 1 turbs for the same price.
Ls400 engine drops right in with mounts of coarse,a set of crown log manifolds and crown ecu or aftermarket one.

22-05-08, 11:48 GMT+10#13 This Toyota Caldina has a twin turbo'd Lexus V8 in it. Stock motor running 15psi and it went pretty farken hard. Clutch was slipping when I went in it and it was still one of the quickest cars I been in

24-05-08, 13:19 GMT+10#16 what ecu would be the way to go with one of these engines?

25-05-08, 16:38 GMT+10#17 i use a haltech e6x,at the time its was about the only one able to control toyotas stepper motor and i had also previously installed one on a efi 308 for the same reason.
Otherwise the crown ecu if you want a factory one,it doesnt work in conjuction with the auto so its good if you want a manual box or a c4/th350 etc.

28-05-08, 16:30 GMT+10#18 I was considering a conversion, into my WB ute. But finding someone who wants the work well thats another question!
The thing with the toyota engines is that they are awesomely reliable!

28-05-08, 17:04 GMT+10#19 a bloke i work with has has an LJ 2 door one of these with a vortech s-trim bolted on, basic aftermarket ecu and pushes something around the 300rwkw mark, he built it pretty cheaply 7 years ago and the standard auto just let go a couple of months ago, must say the thing is tuff!!!!

LS isnt a hell of a lot more..
conversion might be less for the 1UZ but it has nowhere near the potential.. the power its got stock you're pretty much stuck with, and its not that much.. only way to get them boogying is with FI... an LS on the other hand easy bolt ons, cams, heads, exhaust, 300rwkw+
so if you're chasing a better performing combo, LS is in a league of its own... especially its aftermarket
