I have a very similar problems in my VLC 5ltr with bad vibrations, heck the interior buzzes at me from the vibrations sometimes. Only happens from around 1000RPM - 2000RPM (in any gear) and only slightly above that. Click it to neutral while rolling, revs drop right down to idle and it goes away... Im pretty sure it has something to do with the exhaust/extractors (from the resonance through the body)/ maybe even engine mounts and motor position. Ive never heard of gearboxes causing vibrations, maybe slightly off converter or loose converter bolts but even then I hear thats more of a fast clunking sound if that was the case. Also if it was a **** tire or the driveline i Dont think it would go away if you click it in neutral. With my car the vibration doesnt have anything to do with speed, only the engine RPM. Have you checked this out with yours or is it only at high speeds?

Cheap way to check would be to remove your tailshaft and get it balanced as it cost's bugger all and they put new uni's in at the same time. If that doesn't fix it then it is more than likely a gearbox fault. Worth a try mate anyhow
