hey guys got the shifter out of my gear box, i took it out in the first place coz i want to make it shorter and i will probably bend it to so it doesnt hit the handbrake anymore. but by looking at it im not sure how im gonna shorten it, and ideas ?? and also there is a piece of hose on the end of it ?? why is this ? i got my conversion done at a place i found to be dodgy after. is there ment to be somesort of rubber gromit or something instead of this hose ??

That is INCREDIBLY sh*t. Its a nylon plastic bush that sits in the selector shaft coupling.
They're around $12 from Nissan new. Please get a new one.
No idea how to acheive the other stuff you've asked.

ok thanks mate, that really annoys me that when you pay good money for something and you get little shortcuts like this. having that on there instead of the plastic bush, would that cause problems with shifting ? ive been having trouble with shifting down to second..

wtf? it hits the handbrake ? sounds like the gearstick was in back to front!! If you look at the stick it should kink up towards the dash. And yeah it wouldn't suprise me if that hose is causing problems shifting! get the nylon bush and check it again.

If you have a VL shifter in an R33 box in a VL, it'll hit the handbrake.

i dunno i got told its a mx7 box from the guys that did it but who knows with them. I think they did have the shifter in back to front, from memory before i took it out it was kinked towards the handbrake.. I just went and put it back in kinked towards the dash and now that is way to far fiorward when in 1st,3rd, and 5th, so i dunno i might just heat up where its bet and see if i can bend it back a bit. also when i pulled it back out the piece of hose was gone.. its fallen off inside the gearbox and i cant see it from the top, will that matter that its in there ??

Oh god.....
Take it bak to the boys that did it and get right up em, get them to fix it all.
I wouldnt be ****ing around like you have and lose the piece of rubber hose they put on into your gearbox.
The gear stick goes in with the kink to the back of the car (handbrake) It will only hit if your using a vl shifter into a r33 box Or maybe having garden hose bush gave it so much slack it was hitting.
God it must of been shifting like dog balls.
Why do you want to shorten it anyway. I find there a good length.

Yes, the shortened shifters look retarded anyway.
Not long until you gearbox gives up with that crap floating around it it.

How dodgy.
If you wanna shorten your shifter just cut it. You'll have to use an aftermarket gearknob though. The ones that screw down on the sides instead of screwing down onto the shifter thread.

29-05-08, 23:49 GMT+10#10 oh its just ive seen a few cars with shortened ones and think they look a little better, and yeah i did end up cutting it and am currently using an aftermarket knob, im gonna put it in the lathe at work when i get back there and make it abit smaller so i can put another thread on it for the original knob.
yeah the thing about them guys i dont think i want them touching my car anymore, i have taken it back to them 3 times. and plus it was about 6 months ago now. and yeah trust me the shifting was terrible im still waiting for the ****ing part from nissan slow *******s..
will it really stuff my gearbox up if that hose is in there ?? should i try changing the fluid and see if it comes out ??

30-05-08, 11:18 GMT+10#11 I dont like the idear of it flooting around in there might jam selectors or something.
Altho its only a little piece of rubber. Is there any chance of fishing it out from the top??

30-05-08, 11:19 GMT+10#12 Yes, you should definately change the fluid in the hope it cvomes out. But unless its right on top of the drain plug, your chances are slim. It'll be in the back half of the box (unless its been chewed up and put into the front half) - I would honestly crack your box open and get it out.

30-05-08, 12:29 GMT+10#13 i tried fishing it out from the top and cant seem to find it. ill try flushing it out i think i could do with a oil change anyway. I hope it comes out since it fell in the car has hardly been moved. i think i moved it out of the driveway once and then back. to get inside the box and get it out. would that mean id have to take the gbox out of the car ?? thanks for the advice so far fellas

30-05-08, 13:24 GMT+10#14 Yeh just drop the box out and open the gear box up. Not to hard if u have the tools/space.
5spdvl have u ever come across a stuck drain plug in the mx7??
Ive tried everything to get mine out (rattle gun, broke a braker bar) Cant crack it. Even when i had the box out the other day i couldnt budge it.

30-05-08, 13:33 GMT+10#15 No I haven't, but if you're breaking breaker bars then theres something not right. Maybe some genius hit it with loctite? Or the casing is warped.
But still...maybe time for a big 25mm drill bit? ;P Or split the gearbox and check out the other side.

30-05-08, 14:09 GMT+10#18 Even still rusty, you'd think even if it was cross threaded it would still come out? Mangled, but out? FPOS.
Hell, after your clutch problems, a rebuild is probably a good idea!

30-05-08, 16:08 GMT+10#19 My problems not the drain plug its getting the ****ing filler plug out!!
It's stuck! I have tried everything my strength can go to! I even got underneath the car, held onto the K-frame and pushed the breaker bar as hard as I could with my legs and still no go. I gave up and now have to use the shifter hole to fill up each time. Just gotta be careful how much you put in.
seans_vl - You'll find a lot of mechanics are dodgey as fark. IMO, car mechanics is the most dodgiest of all trades, no offence to anyone.
I do my own work, at least you know it's done right and at least your not getting charged out $100 an hour which is normal for a mechanic these days.

30-05-08, 16:28 GMT+10#20 hey mate if you want to shortan it, take it some where with a hydralic puller and get the top black section pulled off from there cut it to the size you want and cut a new thread for it and off you go.
