what insurance companies are some of you guys with? my calais is only insured for $3000... but owes me about $13000.
its in my olds name, so i could get full cover. the insurance company doesnt know its turboed and if my old man said he wants to raise the value cause it's now "turbocharged" im sure they won't .
plus if it was stolen, even if i insured it for $7000, which would only cover the rims and car, not stereo etc... im sure they would just say that a vl calais with 292000kms is only valued at $1500 and that's all i'd get!!!.
i say this because i came out of pak n save the other night to find a group of "natives" standing around it farking fried off their nuts.
when i jumped in it they were like. "chur bro sik holden thats bad" one day im gonna come out and it'l be gone.
thats when i start the "Pakeha War"

Edit your post so your alarm brand is deleted, you don't know who's reading this...
Unfortunately a lot of companies don't really care what sort of alarm you have. I know for a fact that National Auto Club don't give discounts for your alarm, no matter how good. I'm seriously thinking about a GPS based unit when my car is back on the road. Think they are down to about $1000 now. Well worth it. I'm in exactly the same boat as you insurance wise at the mo, so I'll be doing a bit of research come rego time.

had i walky rep and smashed the front bar up, insurance co said quote of $3000+ to repair respray etc.they were pissed as its just a VL worth $2000, still had to pay $600 excess to get it fixed. I learn that insurance co are a bunch of pricks end of the day theyre out to make money!

Both my cars are with State, full cover now, when I first got the 2L they tried turning me away even though we had called and checked before I bought it! (They've always been under my name) Full cover was a couple hundred cheaper than 3rd party when I got my wagon I think they're both insured for $2400.. they wouldn't insure the wheels for theft if they cost more than $800 or something, but that was the same as the excess.. why the **** would I bother claiming? So I just said yeah whatever they're worth less.
I never sorted out if my alarm would reduce the cost cause I don't know what rating it has.
Oh one great part of the conversation when I was insuring the wagon was 'does it have any engine modifications?' "well, it has extractors, does that count?" 'What are they?' "It's the exhaust manifold" 'Where is that?' "on the exhaust.." 'So it's not part of the engine?' "Uhhh.. I guess not? "

I was with state as I wanted to insure the wag before I drove it all the way home from Invercargil as it was done in a hurry had like a day to sort it out it got messed up it's down as a N/A wagon Tried to get it changed but no go
So I've been told that AMI they have like Classic car cover or something so we trying to sort it now
On the immobilizer thing they ok but I know of 2 cars - jailbar and a camaro that had the best of the best alarms with all the bells and whistles gone no trace just gone the jailbar had GPS they still havn't found it they track it out the driveway at 2am and then the car vanished !!
So I guess if someone ask's about your alarm act dumb or be a smart asre "I'm not sure what alarm it is" or "A good one" get a unit that has all black wiring hide the wiring especially when we have our cars on show at big events such as the Brock Cruise

I'm with Vero for everything and they are awesome. I've had a few small claims like people driving into the back of me and lost sunglasses and they’ve paid out every time no questions asked. Never had to claim on my VL though
My VL is insured for an agreed sum of $35,000 and cost me $1,200 per year for full cover with a $300 excess. $35,000 wouldn’t replace it, but it goes a long way
Oh and I’m over 25 so that helps a lot!

You might as well not have any insurance... they wont pay out if something happens
Your best bet is to tell them the truth and get 3rd party. Then if you have any money left over put it into a seperate account and insure yourself

I have state insurance full cover for 3grand , but owes me twice that now. They ask it had anything, i said is lowered and 16inchmags n extractors, they asked if the spring were standard lol so said they are technically as compressed.. No worries in general excess only 3 hundy.
You should really tell em ur car is turboed, cause they can get real anal if not know about mods n not pay out ..

13-05-08, 16:20 GMT+10#10 Im not a big fan of AMI, They will only 3rd party My Berlina because (and I quote) "We are not prepared to insure you due to the vehicle being over 20 years old and our computer system has market value set below the purchase price you have given us" Im still working out what to do on that one.
However I signed my Calais over to Dad, and that has full insurance for about half the cost of 3rd party on my ****box Berlina!

13-05-08, 16:25 GMT+10#11 Alarms really are a deterrent and nothing more. If someone wants it bad enough, they will take it. Mike, I take it the Jailbar you on about is the one with the huge stolen thread on Trade Me? Kinda shocking that the GPS suddenly just stopped. I've heard that these things don't work too well if the vehicle is enclosed inside a metal trailer...
Pretty reasonable insurance you got there Alex...do you have to pay in a lump sum or do they take installments? I know NAC only insure you if you pay in advance.
And guys, you really should be as upfront as possible when insuring your car, my GF had a lot of trouble getting any money out of State last year after her car was stolen. She had added a new exhuast at Christmas, but forgot to tell insurance company. Got stolen in Feb. State initially refused to payout because of the exhaust. The car was found stripped a day later, exhaust still attached yet they still didn't want to pay out. Took about two months to eventually come to an agreement and for them to pay up. They then told her they wouldn't insure her or her cars again. Nice.

13-05-08, 16:58 GMT+10#12 Yeah something reminded me about insurance this morning, and I remembered I should've said what Alex said, may aswell not have insurance if you do it under your parent's names or mod it and don't tell them. If they have any reason to think that you're the main driver they will investigate it and find a way to not pay out.
Alarms aren't too great, I'm happy I have one, but we all know when an alarm goes off, no one pays any attention.. so it's just so hopefully I hear it I guess.
I should probably tell State about my nosecone I guess, dunno if I told them about my speeding tickets either.. which I had forgotten about until now.. oh ****.
Forgot about the market value stuff.. you can't calculate a car's value just by it's age, and time spent on it is time spent on it.

13-05-08, 17:48 GMT+10#13 I have heard bad things about State, my older brother had a Civic insured with them and he wrote it off... they didn't pay out because he didn't tell them about a recluses driving charge he had years earlier... $10k down the drain...
I forgot to note that my deal is with a broker who insures our company and 4 company cars and my home all with Vero, so maybe I get a better deal
I remember when I was under 25 trying to insure a $40,000 injected V8 VL I had to pay $1,500 per year for 3rd party with a $5,000 excess
If your under 25 my advice is insure just for 3rd party and if you stack your car rebuild it out of your own pocket
If anyone needs a decent alarm my brother has an alarm company and has done a full on setup in my car

13-05-08, 18:27 GMT+10#15 The insurance thing is a tough one. I've had third party fire and theft for years now - never really had anything worth insuring fully comp - that is until the VL gets back on the road! Biggest hurdle will be getting full insurance for the first time, because in all those years, I haven't been insured, only the people I might hit, so I essentially have no driving history and therefore start from square one. Doh!

13-05-08, 19:07 GMT+10#16 Aaron, are you over 25?? If not.. then **** you're lucky. And you didn't pay $10000 for it I thought the auction was $5500 or something.

Yeah I hadn't even thought about full insurance, but when I called to do the wagon I asked how much 3rd party was, it was $500 something, so she said full was $350 (a year)..
Alex, how much would the fancy alarm cost?
