Help Stop Boot Rattle Starting At $10
Please keep in mind this is only a guide and I don't hold responsibility for any damage you may do.
This is a very quick, simple guide on how to help stop boot rattle on any car starting at $10.
Things you need:
1-8 Cans of ExpandaFoamRagsGlovesPatienceTIME
First I'd like to explain where I think most people go wrong when doing this. Most people seem to think the problem is here; please refer to highlighted areas in picture below.
The main cause of this vibration is actually the two sheets of metal that meet in the boot; please refer to highlighted areas in picture below.
Although this is where the main problem is, doing the above can also help. Now I cant stress this enough, ExpandaFoam gets VERY messy. Wear gloves, when, not if, this stuff gets on you're hands it wont come off for weeks. I tried; Bleech, Turps, Metho, Laundry Powder, Petrol, Soaking, nothing gets it off. Keeping that in mind lay old rags or bed sheets over your boot access and tape it down to the car. Making sure to wrap extra fabric around areas exposed. DON'T leave any where exposed.
I recommended practicing with ExpandaFoam, it's not as easy as it seems to use if you're a first timer. If you don't care and want to move on keep this as some advice. Place the can where needed, start with fast 1-2sec presses and LEAVE it there until it stops coming out through the cube. If you go nuts like a spray can it wont stop coming out and will over fill. Also remember that in the drying process, this stuff triples in applied size.
Picture two bricks 30cm apart, with a sheet of metal on top. What would happen if you stand in the middle? It will obviously bend to the floor. But if you added a brick in the middle, it would become more re-enforced but still prone to damage. This is like you're boot, you don't need to apply this stuff everywhere, just every 2-3cm where the two sheets of metal meet in you're boot, a quick 1-2sec spray and build up 'building bricks' to help the metal not flex so much under heavy demand. please refer to highlighted areas in picture below.
Now it's time to completely fill the boot if you wish. Starting and the Lowest Corner First Available hole (Yellow Arrow shown Below), insert the cube facing as far into the corner as you can get it and keep applying until you start to see it come out of the next hole (Blue Highlights Shown below). Than move onto the next hole and continue ect. (Green Arrow shown Below).
It will take time for this stuff to dry. I say give it 8Hrs before thinking to close the boot. Try and leave it parked in direct sunlight and the insides should dry within 48hrs.
This would be very easy to do on a VL, but you need to take extra care in newer models Commodore's. eg VS, the Taillight is apart of the boot. Spray too much foam and you will start to cover the light!
After doing this my Boot Rattle stopped at least 85% with 400WRMS in the boot.
The only bad thing is this doesn't look good, but if you want to go that step further I would sandpaper the surface excess down, fiberglass a smooth surface and paint.
Hope this helps someone
