Does anyone know of any differences between the skyline rb30 and the vl rb30. I have found that wiring colours are different but what I am after is if there is a difference between the pinouts between the two. I am finishing the install of an rb30 into my HR and have a nissan ecu and pinouts but a holden wiring diagram. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Personally i thought there was only 1 type of rb30 and i thought it would of been called a nissan engine rb30 and then you have your series 1 and 2

The holden wiring diagram and nissan pinouts dont line up colour wise. Before I undid the loom to find out if they were the same, I thought someone may know. Thanks

umm, it says "Nissan" on one engine, and "Holden" on the other Also the other big thing thats different is the parts they use, Holden primarly used Bosch parts (alternators starter motors etc) and Nissan used Hitachi parts I think. Also other stuff like the air intake is different etc. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

yeh air intake was slightly different and the vl motor is quoted as having 114kw's where as the r31 is quoted as having 117kw and slightly more torque so yeah. also i think the computer from a vl wont fit into a skyline ecu plug. The main other difference is the skyline has a single fuel pump that can operate at 2 different speeds where as the vl as 2 pumps...

yeah the vl pump runs off a relay and the 31 off the ecu. i have an r31 turbo and i used a vlt computer in it and all i had to do was wire the pump to run on a relay. yes the wiring colours are different but the ecus are interchangeable

There are a few external differences I've come across ordering a bunch of new parts from Nissan over the last few months. Distributors can vary, as can parts of the water piping system down the right side of the engine, parts of the emission system and the air inlet.

Oh and of course Nissan has the better rocker cover oil cap thing. The holden one seems to jam and break. The Nissan one seems to have a mechanism, once it's tight it just clicks freely.

When I went into Nissan to get a new one that's what I got, Holden only had a normal one that when it gets tight siezes, and after a while of going hot and cold they go brittle and because they're so tight they can break.

Pretty much the electrics and air snorkal, you cant use a Nisssan coil on a VL because it doesnt plug in. Does anybody know if the Nissan computer is different.

I've got an R31 engine in the shed and by looking at it, the coil is different, harmonic balancer, the dizzy/CAS is made by mitsubishi or something and one other thing is the adjustable alternator bracket so you don't have to lever your alternator up to tighten it. So, would anyone know why power/torque figures differ a little between the R31 and the VL?? Its at the flywheel so the difference would be in the engines.

no difference in ecu mapping and the nissan airbox is more restrictive then the vl setup, so to claim more kw is all in the marketing text only, not reality, maybe they quote din not sae or jis hp who knows...

it came down to the R31 had better air flow. The engine you have there magnum is a series 3 R31 engine because it has the mistubishi CAS. If you can get one of those the CAS will last forever.. Those bad boys just dont throw in the towel like the normal CAS. There have been differences in the cam at stages but those were only in select models and they were claiming some fair upped increases (but so you should). Thats all I can think of atm
