September 86 is the earliest dated brochure i have listing the V8 engines availability for the Commodore range. Holden had no plans for a VL V8 to exist at all. HDT did the development work and mods to allow the V8 engine to be fitted to the VL floorplan. The development car possibly was never sold but rather went the way of most test mules. HDT's first production VL V8 was roadtested in July 86 and was Calais based. Holden had V8 performance data on the V8 comparing it with the VK version in June 86 which is after the above mentioned HDT car had arrived at HDT. Corsa

Corsa thanks corsa i was trying to figure out the exact date, i was under the impression that it was the auto cross member that was different to make the v8 fit due to the smaller tunnel???? I know, but you started a separate thread asking for build dates so I felt I should chip in here too. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

I dont think you will find much earlier than September '86. I remember Street Machines V8 till 98 campaign which lobbied Holden for an unleaded VL V8, at least it came stock with large valves and can be turned into a beast. Stock we got maximum torque 323Nm at 3200rpm whatever that meant but funny enough it was a bit more than the VK.
