For the last 3 months ive been saving and spending my hard earns to get the vl back on the road with its new setup. After completing roughly 500 km's my garrett gt 35/40 (xr6 unit) decided life was no good and decided to spit the dummy. It appears the bearings have packed it in, and now im left with an expensive paper weight and a shagged car. I honestly dont know if ive got it in me to do it again. Just wondering if anyone else has experianced failed gt turbos and what happened to them? My turbo now has huge shaft play, the front wheels have rubbed the housing, it doesnt produce boost and im too scared to check out the exhaust side of things. Is this turbo repairable or am i up for a new one? Comments and similiar stories would be much appreciated.

MTQ Sydney (Wetherill Park) have exchange units available generally around $1800, no core charge. They are repairable, however if it is as bad as it sounds, both wheels will be damaged and possibly housings aswell

There was another thread about garrett warranties... apparently theyre pretty good about it. Have a quick search. Was it brand new? Warranty?

Thats bad man! i'm into my project also and its a barstard .....a good mate of mine had a rotor and yes thousands and thousands of dollors ended up in his backyard rusting away its a waste but give it another shot i guess my project will be running a rb25 head a rb30 bottom and the turbo is a Holset HX30s they recommened these turbos to heavy duty revs and high boost as for your turbo as long as the motor is fine i guess its still worth it a holset turbo will set you back new $1,950plus gst and theres a few second hand running around its a bit of a large turbo or a HKS similar size around 1,750 contact GCG turbochargers there in condell park NSW nice people to deal with and they can make a pakage for you but its a shame it Shat it self best of luck but

unfortunately for me i bought a second hand unit, looking back on things i suspect it had bearing damage prior to me purchasing it. As they say the poor man pays twice, and ive learned my lesson. yeah i say the turbo is gonesky, the front is bad and from my experiances the exhaust side is usually worse. I guess it will be digging out the na gear/ borrowing na stuff and putting around until funds allow for a new one! Also how sensitive are these turbos for oil cleanliness? ive heard people using filters on the oil inlet but i didnt think they were essential, ive always kept my services up to it. Cheers for the quick comments, im definately never buying a second hand turbo again.

E-Z got no more then 500ks out of his new GT3082R before it went pop.. Then 6 months out of an Ebay turbo, the new owner of the car is till running it. Apon saying that, And being in the car with both turbos, I have bought myself a GT.

all these garretts ****ting themself, makes you think about getting just a plain bearing turbo to begin with, if the ball bearing turbos are so sensitive to everything. once the centres in the ball bearing turbos go, its not really worth rebuilding as its near enough the cost of a complete new turbo. and it always seems garrett have one excuse or another for the failure, but its never the turbocharger itself... i suppose there is alot out there in the field and you only hear about the failures, maybe turbonetics aren't so bad either, lol.

Its never garretts fault, should know that by now..

If garrett turbos are failing, you thing a "copy" is going to be any good? sitting in a car with a GT, Then changing the turbo to an ebay "T70".... was like loosing 80kw and added 800-1000 RPM more lag...

well i bought a gt35r off this forum and didnt even realise till i took the rear housing off that the wheel was shagged! and the shaft was bent im not gonna name who i bought it off but they know who they r! and karma will bite them in the ass! only reason i didnt go back to the guy i bought it off is cause i didnt realise about the damage till i was putting it on my car about 10 months later and it was to late to go and complain. if only i took that exhaust housing off when i bought it! silly me i took the comp cover off but not the exhaust housing lol cost me 750 to repair

thats no good, too many sad stories but as has been mentioned the amount of quality fast cars having trouble free setups far outweighs the people who have had issues like me and others. id like to find work out what makes them die, and are they that sensitive to oil quality. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

If yes then your oil pressure may have been too high, but to fail after only 500kms is extreme. Not enough oil pressure will make it fail real quick. Also dont forget the amount of kms that a turbo has travelled to get in your hands... one drop and its all over for that turbo... also the ball bearings are pretty sensitive to shock and oil pressure/quality Quote: Originally Posted by atmo_bt1 My GT3082r died in a big way as well last year, had probably done a total of 5000kms How did yours fail?? Was it brand new?? GT are a great company 99.9% of the time it wouldnt of been their fault if one of their turbos dies.
