Hey Everyone (1st post btw )
To cut a s**t long story short, my dad's VL Turbo 87 was stolen, rebirthed, found, scumbag arrested (hopefully enjoying the pleasures of prison life ), etc etc... As they converted the car from Auto to Manual and swapped the engine, our amazing legal system let the guy keep his motor and gearbox. My dad wants to build her up again for me (minus the turbo because im a P plater ), so today we bought an 88 Holden Commodore VL for its motor and gearbox. This commodore runs both LPG & Unleaded, only problem is that for some reason when we switch it from running LPG to Unleaded, the engine cuts out like its out of Petrol/Gas. Im not that into the mechanics of cars , dad is though (but doesn't know much bout the LPG system). Can anyone give us some ideas on what the problem might be with the petrol running problem.
Thanks in advance

The guy we bought the commodore off says it hasnt worked for a couple of years... yea there was bout a quarter of a tank of fuel there
well if it hasnt worked for a couple years, then its probly not guna work man, id probly take it to a fuel/lpg specialist, or at least someone who knows what theyre doin and get em to check it out.

Yea, i can live with it running full LPG but the option for petrol would have been good as a backup e.g. if i run out of LPG in the middle of nowhere. Probably while we are transferring the engine and gearbox to the Calais shell, we hopefully might find some small thing that will turn out to be the problem. We will eventually have to go to an LPG fitter to make sure everything is hooked up/safe/working with the lpg system in the Calais. So its just the waiting game now
Let me describe what happens: The car (Commodore) starts up and runs fine on the lpg, but as soon as u flick the switch to go to petrol, engine refuses to run. Sort of acts like a killswitch (handy if some prick tries to steal the car and needs to switch to petrol for whatever reason). the sellers father is a mechanic and said it might be a problem with the fuel system (cant remember what part exactly), and the seller was too lazy to fix it... any new ideas

any noise when the red's are up?
coz the vl fuel pumps are renoun'd for being very noisey when priming....
No Noise? ...its probably dead.
especially after not using it for a while(or even "only priming itself for god know's how long") can kill it.
keep in mind its possible your fuel pump is 20yrs old.
but still dont rule out anything until proven.
also if it hasnt been used for years id be paying some close attention to the condition of the fuel hoses, they can become very brittle and crack especially if theyre not in use.
Id say the fuel pump has just dried out and died, but as mentioned above check to see if its trying to prime the system, also make sure the the pump is getting power aswel.
The thing with lpg converted cars is that people usually dont care about the fuel system anymore and this is when problems arise. I also own a VN on duel fuel and it doesnt work on petrol either, and to be honest im scared to even try it.
With the availability of lpg these days running out in the middle of nowhere is rare.
Hopefully your car that was returned already has the fuel system componants and the pump+lines etc should still be healthy. if so id get the injectors checked out and you should be in business.
I dont think i would have the parts in the stolen VL, as when it had its engine and gearbox taken out, it was given to the criminals father, who coincidently owns a wrecking yard. in that light, he ripped the whole motor out by cutting hoses etc etc (true wrecker style). he also took all the parts that were worth money (e.g our aftermarket big brakes which he switched them to the standard VL brakes, took the VL Turbo computer and replaced it with the standard VL computer). The ******* couldnt be charged for taking those parts for some ungodly reason. After this VL incident, ive lost all faith in the police and legal system (interesting that i want to become a forensic officer once i finish high school...). Ill find out whats wrong with it once we go pick up both cars as they both arent registered...
yeah best idea is to get a plan of attach going, find out exactly what you have left, that way you can build up a list of needed parts to get it running nicely.
yeah i agree 100% with the po po and etc, they just dont care about cars anymore.
If possibly get some pics of the engine bay etc that way people on here can see whats missing and give suggestions to what you may or may not need.
Dirty scumbag wreckers, I cant believe they allowed that.
All the best with it.
also, chances are that the person u got it off never used the petrol obviously coz gas is cheaper, and the pump rubbers have worn and seized up, make sure thats still goin.
your injectors will have gummed up too for sure.
you'll prolly find they are not even spraying
most folks who run LPG on their cars don't bother with the injectors anymore, then, when it comes to it ; they try and nothing happens.
like some of the other folks were saying, replace the hosetails on teh injectors too for good measure as they will have probably gone brittle too
