Backfiring over 4.5k rpm

My vlt seems to like backfiring and starts to struggle when pushed over 4.5k. Don't have the slightest idea why. I think it might be starting to be running a bit rich when it hits that point but not sure. The exhaust manifold gasket might and prolly does have a leak in it, either at the block or at the flange where the turbo bolts on. Would that affect it at all? Does anyone have any ideas why it would be acting up like this? Any help would be much appreciated. Aside from the problems over 4.5k it seems to be running beautifully, perhaps a tad rich but that'd be the extent of it. Thanks Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

are you sure its not leaning out and that backfire is actually detonation?? If it was running rich youd think it would start to run better up in the rev range when it needs more fuel

Yeah thats the worst case scenario. You can occasionally smell fuel so thats sorta why i thought rich... Could very well be lean. Is there anyway of checking this? What could be causing it to run lean?

Perhaps i shoulda stated that it works fine while free revving so only has problems while on boost. Is this an issue? Would support the running lean theory a bit more wouldn't it... And it was running perfectly up till a coupla days ago. I haven't the slightest idea why its suddenly started playing up... Help!

do a ecu error code cheak but id say it might be the CAS.. if it is the cas it will get worst to the point where it will affect your idle and you will hear a slight miss that gets worse

it turned out to be the pipe for the IAC. it had broken off and was jst sitting there. whenever boost started ramping up it would push out and, well, you can imagine hwo the ecu reacted to that lol. thats all fixed now.
