what is the sub rated at and whats the amp rated at, putting a too high load on an amp with no enough power can cause it to heat up and go into thermal mode eg, 2 subs in series with 200wrms each hooked up in series with a load of 8 ohms on the amp when the amp can only give out 100w rms at 4 ohms, 50w rms at 8 ohms, it WILL GET HOT! but its different when you put them in parralel, 2 4ohm subs in parralel with 200wrms each will put a load of 2ohm on the amp, thus the amp will be able to give out more power, 200wrms at 2ohm, and if it can handle1 ohm, 400w rms and it wont get as hot but will heat up a little bit also if its 2 or 4 channel and running 1 or 2 subs, put them in parralel and bridge the 2 channels, youll get more power and less load on the amp.

thanx for the reply will have a look and get sume more info i think his amp is like 600wat and he has 2 subs not shore of what wat it is.amp can get air where it is.

does it only switch off when you have it cranking or is it at low volumes too

This ^^ doesn't sound right to me. Impedance of the speakers is irrelevant, 50w is 50w and 400w is 400w......which load will generate the most heat? The 400w load i would have thought. Is the sub matched to the amp? i.e. If the subs impedance is 2 ohm, is the amp capable of driving a 2 ohm load? If possible, the amp should have a higher power rating than the sub. Speakers don't like to be fed DC signals. This will happen if the amp signal gets clipped (because it's rated too low) and will kill the voice coil quick smart.

One watt is equal to one joule of work per second

jesus...is GRK-WPN ever right about anything?

No, but he always tries to sound like he is.

ok lets make it short a 2 1000w subs will make a 600w amp get hot simple enough?

If the amp is cutting out when the volume is turned up relatively high and the amp is getting extremely hot usually means your overloading the amp. It can't handle it and switches into protection mode so it won't blow anything. Either the subs wrms is too big for the amp, or the amp wrms is too small for the subs. Cheapest way is borrow things from mates for a quick test. Connect 2 smaller rating subs and see if it continues or connect a larger wrms amp which will excede both subs rating together. Should be able to find your problem that way. If not and all wrms ratings are correct loads i'd start searching the wiring, etc.

peak power means nothing, its rms that means anything and yeh, amps will get hot, so will head units my aircon is routed to he headunit, and there are 5 induction and 5 exhaust fans behined the rear bumper air goes from right to left

How is 2 x 1000w subs any different to say 1 x 600w sub connected to a 600w amp?? The rating attached to subs is based on the mechanical & electrical limits of the components....it has nothing to do with power consumed by the sub. This will be determined by the impedance of the sub. i.e. A sub rated at 1000w with 2ohm impedance will draw the same current from the amp as a 600w with 2ohm impedance, therefore power is the same.

hay all thank you for the help he has done some stuff to it hasnt done it since so i think he has got it sorted dosnt even need 1 hes on his l young ppl lol

oh, then tell him to turn off the bass boost and turn gain down, its common for l platers to have the amp maxd out so it sounds hektic kebab, u end up turning it down after the 2nd song when u got a migrane from the horible noise

Like GRK-WPN has... The extra cold air gives better performance to your subs and amps... Just remember to cut the holes big enough for maximum performance

So your saying that if i was to run two 1000w amps of a 800w 2ch amp its gonna get hot lol... as far as i can see the overall outcome will be two subs running off 400w channels and not running at there full potential.. I was running a 1500w sub off a 1000w amp and never had any issues with heat, cutting out what so ever.. Whats your answer to that one?

dude thats one 1500w sub off a 1000w amp, that will hardly heat it up im running 2 1200w subs with 400wrms each off a amp which has 600wrms, it heaps up and no shlt, i did put CAI for the amp so it dosnt thermal, and it dosnt but **** it gets hot CAI on amps is a MUST do sometimes, ive even put fans in mines, gives it more power too, just like a car i guess?

f uck man they are ment to get hot thats why they have a big heat sink on them they use power to make a bigger noise from a smaller signal think you need an intercooler on your amps then they can produce 1million giga watts of power and while your at it stick water injection on too
