Having Killed a VL Auto, They are pretty robust as long as you do your thrashing in Power Mode, They are essentially a 3 Speed box with an overdrive unit on the front, and its the overdrive which is the weak link. When it goes (or even starts slipping) fragments from the OD clutches and brakes take out the rest of the box. Also they hate being shifted to 2nd and 1st manually while moving. Manual conversion using the right equipment can be done in an afternoon.
