Engine Knock??

I Have a spare parts VL. Problem is with the engine. Approximately 1500 to 2000rpm no load , the engine rattles. sounds like one cylinder.The noise is a clacking type of noise like when you rap the throttle on in an engine with a big end nock.It is quite loud. When i rap the throttle of this one, it is quiet. When I drive the car, I cant make it do it. Any Ideas Appreciated!
