Yo Just saw that the rod on my actuator which attaches to the waste gate flap is adjustable, i can adjust the length of it by turning a fitting on the end. By adjusting the length, thats essentially a form of boost control, am i right?

not really, the diaphram still opens at 6-7psi and thats that. all you are doing is limiting the amount the flap can open and that might make it boost creep if it doesn't open far enough at high rpm/load. its adjustable so at factory they can adjust the preload properly and crimp it locked once adjusted to spec. if you want boost control in that manner, fit a suitable spring which will mean the diaphram will need to overcome the standard internal spring and the external spring you fit and more boost will be the result. otherwise just get a boost controller or bleed tap etc like normal.

Wouldn't making the rod shorter just open the wastegate more meaning less boost? I would think it would be more of an adjustment for the closed position than a boost control. I suppose you could make the rod longer, meaning the wastgate wouldn't be able to open as far, but this would probably upset the Diaphram in the actuator. I wouldn't touch it, if you want to up the boost then use a proper boost controller along the actuator vacuum line. Edit: beaten to it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

its purely for preload setting only. and a very cheap and dangerous method of boost control.

Yea mine wasnt crimped at all. Reason i asked was because i was in the library today reading this huge book called "Forced induction performance tuning" which is a fantastic book. The guy was talking about all the forms of boost control and he said that some guys in the old days would mod the actuator rod by threading it so you could adjust its length and this was their boost control. I then came home and looked at mine. Id try it out but i dont have a boost gauge so it would be pointless. Im not going to touch it, getting an electronic boost controller anyway. Cheers

dont touch it buy a boost controler and do it rite or bang u will blow head gaskets like crazy ,l no this because my stupid father did it in 88 with his and had heaps of problems ,as he was older and would not listen to any 1

I've got an adjustable actuator. Running 14psi. I don't know much about it because it was like that when I bought the car. I've got no T-piece or anything. The previous owner said I can adjust the boost buy turning it but to get to it I have to take my intercooler piping off.

Hmm yea, thinking about it now i dont see why it would be a dangerous way to raise boost? Making it shorter would simply mean the gate didnt open as much, so making a bit more boost??

no its not that simple, you can't adjust boost by the above method period! if you mess with the setting you will get boost spike and/or boost creep and/or wastegate creep or just erratic boost control in general.

yeah you wont get more boost the whole time it will still be 6 psi up untill a certain rpm and then it will just get progressivly higher in relation to rpm. its a good way to kill an engine

Mine doesn't do that. Boost starts dying off after around 5000rpm.

by shortening the rod by say 2 turn would that make my car get up to boost quicker? because the wastegate starts to open at about 4.5-5psi and i dont want it to open till 7psi. Or should i just buy an electronic boost control lol
