tools needed:
Volt metre
philips head screw driver
How to do:
un plug your AFM,(no need to take completely) set volt metre to ohms,
place the two lead's from volt metre to, 1 an 6 pins on your AFM, the reading will come back, mine was 398, then the little cap to the left on your afm, place the screw driver in there an turn it a bit then test again, keep doing this till it's around or spot on 382 reading on your volt metre,
We tested this on 4 different vl's an all got better fuel ecnomy,
hope this help's some people out, (i don;t think there's anything that you can stuff up, but i don't take an responsobility if anything happens)

.........?? why would you Not!!
excuse my ignorance, but i would prefer to adjust it up myself and save the $150 ! (if you can find one that works)
just to clarify VLT_BOY, the reading is supposed to be 500 Ohms correct?

I wouldn't say that you're actually reconditioning AFMs by doing this.....adjusting them somewhat, but is 500ohms even correct?
How did you work this out?

I tryed to tune mine ended up screwing the screw in to much and snaped the fine wires in the afm, its not a good idea to play around with it lol , local autosparkie said 1 turn the rong way can ruin it.

Recondition is suppose to mean back to how it was new.
isnt this just modding the air mixture??
i used to do this on my Old TX3 Turbo laser.
If they are fully stuffed and cant be fixed then they cant be reconditioned.

500ohms?
More like 350-400ohms.. i think youll find thats the actual figure it is meant to be..
Correct me if im wrong... more ohm's means itll run that little bit leaner.. and therefore less ohms it will run richer..??

09-03-08, 22:36 GMT+10#10 yeh dont know where you got 500 from? i havnt owned my vl for 2 years now but i remember playing around with mine when it stuffed up, and pretty sure i searched on the forum and it was 363 or something around there from memory? might be worth using a search..

09-03-08, 23:00 GMT+10#11 Holden service manuals say the afm is set to 386 ohms.
This shouldnt really be a technical article, it isnt really reconditioning the afm... and sorry but im not going to give my cars afm screw a couple of turns to 500 ohms to see if I can get a gain on my economy without a bit more proof or understanding...
If this was something of high regard and value, our local electrical technical guru Niche would have made a point of it in his countless replies into helping us gain more economy.

11-03-08, 10:19 GMT+10#12 My understanding is that 386ohms is the factory setting and takes into account all sensors being new and accurately working.
Shouldn't the resistance be calibrated via the red and green flashing LED's on the ECU when in tuning mode?
Thus meaning every cars resistance value on the AFM will be slightly different.

Well, yes.
We tuned mine at tafe with the 4 gas analyser on the car. Ended up needing to be adjusted about 100 ohms one way (can't remember if it was richer or leaner) to get it running spot on.
Oh, and 386 ohms is the factory setting.

14-03-08, 14:20 GMT+10#17 So who's going to do this mod and lean out thier motor and pop a piston and rod? Shouldnt really be a technical article as it appears that calaisturbo.com.au are endorsing something that could cause serious damage.

14-03-08, 14:25 GMT+10#18 Of course turning it to 500 is going to give better fuel economy, because its leaning it out!!! Its set at factory to 386 ohms...

some mates of mine used a VL afm in a formula SAE open wheeler racecar, (university of WA motorsport team)
They discovered that these have a cleaning circuit. you basically run 12 volts over 2 terminals on the afm and it heats up the filament and cleans it. made a massive difference so after that they did it before every race. i reckon that's what yours would need. 'll ask the lads which terminals they used to do it.
