Revs fine in neutral, but won't drive...

This is driving me mad, this problem seemed to develop rather quickly... my VL takes ages to start when it's cold, prob about 30 seconds of cranking. Then it runs like a tractor for about 30 seconds, and then all of a sudden it's fine. It will then idle perfectly, will rev fine in neutral and all is peachy until you try to drive the thing. It will drive fine for a short period of time, and then it totally ****s up. When it does, if you try and give it any more than about 10% throttle it will just cut out. It will backfire, surge a little bit, cut out again, until you let off the throttle. Under about 10% throttle, it's fine. I have changed the CAS, AFM and fuel pump for known working ones. I have checked leads, air regulator, plugs, power transistor, coil, fuel pressure. All of the connectors in the engine bay have been cleaned and checked, they all seem to be alright. Computer self-diagnosis brings up no codes. What the hell is wrong with my car???

Mm if u have done ALL those things............ maybe, dont quote me and freak out, but maybe. Check coolant and overflow bottle. any signs of oil or a smell of oil? Check oil cap underneath, any white nasty nasty ****? Compression test It is possible at some stages of a head on its way out that it wont start for a while on an EFI and when it does, it runs like a ****n dog like your saying. How ever in saying that if you checked all the above and nothing i would take to a mechanic, its really hard to diagnose things like this over internet. or if not a mechanic keep trying smaller things. Tried your fuel filters??

Sound to me as of youve got a hidden air leak somewhere. Could also be a blocked fuel filter. Did you check the fuel pressure while you try to drive forward??

Fuel filter? Sounds like an issue I had a while ago. that was the culprit...

Fuel filter is also new, lol. I think I'm still suspecting fuel supply is the problem, although I have already tested fuel volume and pressure at the rail. Pressure was down slightly, but not enough to make it **** up that badly. Volume was up near 2.5 litres/minute. Bearing in mind also that the car will drive fine and will rev to at least 5000 rpm for a period of time before it stuffs up. As for the head suggestion, it cranks for far too long before it starts for it to be that. Also oil cap is clean, and if it were a problem such as that it would be constant. I've had a cracked head and a blown head gasket previously and it's not like that.

it was a suggestion, but good news if none of the above dizzy as suggested by someone else is something you cant rule out. take cap off check for wear, and if you can take dizzy out and check spline. have you got what you need to check the dizzy or a swap over. these are just suggestions as i know this would be doin ya head in! i hate things like this where you have to narrow them down 1 by 1 and murphys law its the last thing you check :P Quote: Originally Posted by jordy Fuel filter is also new, lol. Maybe the intank pump? Mine was progresssively worse and got to the stage where it wouldnt get enough fuel to turn over. The gauze on the intank pump had corroded and started to block up the inlet of the pump.

Dizzy is all good. I've stripped it, cleaned it out, new CAS and bearing, etc. etc. and still no change. Fuel pressure is going a little spastic today, flicking between 25 and 30 psi @ idle. Suspecting there might be a blockage in the tank.

Could be that the pump is fine for a while until it heats up. Youve gotta hook up a fuel pressure meter so you can see it while your driving, then rev it out and see what happens. Its gotta be a proper differential gauge, im sure youd know that though.

coolant temp sensor?

Does it jolt alot when u give it more than 10% throttle? Same happened to me. Clean dizzy and afm plug and plug in and out 10 times. Also battery could be dying and thats why its taking ages to start. the ecu needs enough power to function otherwise the car will just turn off while driving.

timing?

Pretty sure it's a fuel problem now. It pumps out less than 5 litres fine, but when I pumped out 20 litres it started flowing pretty slowly towards the end. I'm going to pull the tank out tomorrow and see what I can find.

Just pull the intank pump out through the hole. No need to pull whole tank out...

Intank pump ftw! Also found a random assortment of old fuel hose, rusty chunks and a hose clamp inside the tank Runs heaps better now. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
