Just purchased a nice t3/t4 and having a think about the easyest way to install it on a standard manifold. is it possible to keep the manifold on the head and unscrew the 4 flange bolts or does the manifold have to come off?? Do i need a flange gasket? Seems easy because the rear housing is the same so are all the oil and water lines. Have to get accuator with a bracket that fits the t4 front but thats a different story. Also how hard are the flange bolts to get off? Doubt they have ever been off.

I found the easiest way was to rip the manifold off. You can get to the flange a lot easier and bolt up the dump pipe aswell without too much stress this way. For piece of mind get a new flange gasket, I didn't and mine has been fine for over 12months although it looked fairly new (it was still silver). Definately get a new manifold gasket they're cheap too. Those bolts will be a real pain in the a

yep, it's easier when taking the manifold out, that way when bolting back the new turbo, it will be a hell easier to torque up the bolts, you'll have all the room in the world . replace the both gaskets to keep your mind at peace. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

drown the manifold bolts in wd40!! the mongrels have a bad habit of snapping and helicoils are an expense you don't need.

"IF" you can get the 4 bolts off the manifold to turbo join, then yes you can perservere and get the turbo off by itself down the back, or remove the power steer pump and out through the front. If you do a search there is some good threads on this question, some people swear the manifold off with turbo is the easiest way, and it probably is, if you don't snap studs, but others agree its not that bad to perservere. But I would try to get those 4 bolts off first, because if you can't get a tool in there to crack them, then the manifold will have to come off anyway.

If it wasn't for the coolant return on the block being a btch I would've had the whole lot out and turbo swapped in an hr. Manifold out is easiest cos those four bolts will do your head in if its still in the car.

who knows, a/r means two tenths of bugger all, the compressor cover family will give a better picture. if its a t03 cover it will fit (obviously as this is standard), t04b cover will fit if you grind the manifold a bit to clear, t04e will not fit it needs 10mm spacer, gt series covers also need spacer.

doesnt look like a garret turbo, looks like an ebay style turbo. TURBO ZY compressor housing doesnt sound right, and that rear turbine housing doesnt look like VL style rear flange
