I couldn't work out what I should put in the search engine, so here goes a new thread. On my way home from work tonight (in my crappy RB20E sedan) I stopped by a friends place, couple of minutes later I go to leave, and my key turns over to the ignition on position (where it is when the engine is running) but it just wont push any further to start it. I had to leave it there. I just can't work out what is wrong with it.. Before anyone suggests anything, the steering lock pin isn't jamming it up, as I said the key turns over (so it can go from off, back to that extra setting, and forward to accessories/ignition), just not to the starter. And if I try pushing it further there is NO starter noise, and it feels really stiff. If anyone knows anyone who has had this happen or just has any ideas, that'd be great. The only thing I can think of is the starter solenoid is jammed? We gave push starting it a quick go, but if the solenoids jammed it's probably a good thing that we didn't get it going that way.

Is that the pin that locks the wheel when you take the key out? I might try open it up. Problem is, it's not at my house.. Thanks though!

Im not 100% sure all i know as it was what he described to me as a pin in the ignition barrel...they get worn apparently common in VL's as he had done a few he said.

Just to be sure, your key could turn the car on but not start it, right? And if it turns out to be on the starter motor side I'll PM you gasguzler, I don't think I have any spare starter motors here I have road side assistance on my insurance, should I call them? Or do you think that's a waste of time. As an offtopic question about my other car, could anyone suggest a workshop for me to have look at swapping a complete rear end in my wagon? I'm thinking I might just have to buy a complete wagon disc rear end.. then I don't have to worry about diff splines. And I don't want to attempt it here, no room and I don't know how long it could take me to do it. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Yeah the key would turn on to the "on position" where the dash lights come up...but it wouldnt go that little extra bit further to crank it over......was like something was blocking it from going any further if that makes sense

I don't want ANOTHER key on my keyring. So seeing as it isn't the starter motor itself, I should be fine to pushstart it, might be able to get it home that way. And then I dunno, I have to do fiddly **** at work so I might be able to pick it apart, might find another barrel to practice on or something. Anyway, sounds like I know what it is now.. thanks everyone. Oh I'm not sure if I wanna have an auto electrition do it cause it'll more than likely cost a bit more to do up here. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
