Got a small problem with my VL... I get a constant reading of 11.9 volts when the car is running. If I bring the revs up, still 11.9 volts. Should I be replacing the voltage regulator? The battery is fine, I've already checked that.

put the multi meter on the termanals while its running on vlots and switch on your lights if the reading does not go up then follow the power lead down to the alt and check again if it does not go up its either the alt not working or there is no power to the alt to tell it to swicth on so prob the pug while the car is on to see if there is power there most likely its the alt what condition are the leads to the alt and the terminals like the alt should be running 13.4-14.2 if its working properly

YEs what he said ^^^^ and if the alternator has been in the car without any service for 10 years or more then its prob got worn brushes and some cruddy buildup around the brushes from the slip rings, grease, road grime etc. Taking the alternator out is easy, its only 2 bolts and a bit of fiddling, worth taking the fan off first. Once the alternator is out its easy to swap out the brushes for a new set, but worth inspecting the slip rings to make sure they are not worn down so much the new brushes wont have much springiness against them etc... As a quick check first though, unplug the connector and inspect the battery sense line, give this a quick touch to ground (when ign on) to see if your battery indicator comes up on the dash - if it doesnt then the regulator wont necessarily get enough stimulus to operate properly ie. You might have a blown globe or one that is not connecting properly on the dash circuit board...

The dash light comes on and stays on while the car is running, and the volt meter on the dash shows ~11 volts so I think the sense wire is working OK. When it stops raining I'll go outside and check it out.

dont do what i did, went out and bought a new alternator, came home to put it in to find that all i had to do was plug the plug back in on the back of the alternator

And here was I thinking you already checked with a proper multimeter The dash meter on many cars reads low and on mine reads just over 2v below the true battery volts, need to get a multimeter and connect it across the battery terminals... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Oh sorry, I have actually checked with a multimeter. 11 volts is the dash reading, 11.95 volts is the multimeter reading.

If this 11.95v is with engine running then your regulator is not doing its job, workplace agreements with that piece of electronics mean nothing, fire it Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

It was actually cheaper for me to import a whole alternator from the wreckers and put all the parts on individual workplace agreements. All of the old parts have been fired Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
