if the body is in good nick then have yourself a good chassis to build a decent turbo in

the body is in good nick except it has rust in the back window channel.. which i had noticed is pretty common. its the only thing wrong with the body.. i just cant seem to part with it.. i really dont wanna sell it but im not sure what will be the best thing to do.

if you like the body then why not get the motor built up for a turbo? its a good excuse to have the work done

if your body is all good and your happy with your car then just build the engine buddy. think about it. if you buy another calais god knows what this other one will need service'ing and body wise. let alone before you start on the preformance aspect. at least you no what your car is now and the problems it did and does have. buying a whole other car may lead down a whole different road with different headaches too.

yeah i kno and i was thinking if i spend say around 1.5 to 2k on a rebuild then aboutt he same on turbo set up (as im not looking for huge power) then at least i kno that it is gonna have a good engine.. thanks for the feed back fellas.. ok so i have been ringing around a bit and have come across a vlt original motor fully reconditioned and i can get it fully installed everything included for a conversion for $3000.. so now im thinkin of just doin this what you guys think ???

Id take a little time to do minor body repairs myself, who cares if there is a little paint colour mismatch it can be fixed eventually you learn a heap doing that. what was wrong with your original engine ?

Sounds like the big ends or a broken lifter, when the sound is so bad it can be hard to localise it, I changed my big ends twice while block still in car, its not that hard and lasted a while and changing the lifters is also not hard, both can be done seriously in a day each with time to spare and pretty low expense. Big ends for me cost nothing except time as I sized up the s/h bearings. Lifters was just matter of inspection and servicing, no need to take head off.

yeah i kno lifters arent that hard have done them before. but the thing is i wanna go turbo and my engine has done around the 300,000 mark and i kno its been thrashed by the previous owner. so i thought while i was doin the turbo conversion get a recon engine.

Yeah makes sense, better to do it properly, can be a bit of a gamble otherwise, I run 10psi mostly quite lean and used s/h big end bearings from another motor, there is a lot of propoganda (tradition) that you dont do that, but I thought I'd buck the old view and give it a whirl, unfortunately my torque wrench was out of cal (the internal mechanism had dried grease) so the bolts got way too tight and busted a bearing, so did it again a year or so later and its been fine for a couple of years - just the beginning of that now familiar sound again but hey this time I might lash out and use new big end bearings and put a whole $90 towards it edit: I might add I wouldnt do it if the compression was down, as it would then be a waste as there would also be piston slap, broken rings. But hey if your compression is ok then its at least worth an inspection, have the right tools and a keen eye with a digital vernier and notebook and you can happily get 2 to 3 years from bunging in another set for very little money and still run a hi comp setup for turbo. I mean the price you pay for a mechanic/rebuild its worth half of that to do it yourself and get some great tools in the process... Some original photos have not been recovered yet.
