Even though I dont own a VL any more I thought some people may be interested to read the calculations done by a guy on another forum. Im pretty sure its all correct - you can legally run 19 inch wheels on your VL without the need for engineers certs. Dont blame me if its incorrect but have a read. http://www.aussiev8.com.au/showthrea...867#post143867 (http://www.aussiev8.com.au/showthread.php?p=143867#post143867)

I don't think they'd let you go man...not without a defect sticker on your window first. You can explain what ever you like to the police, at the end of the day it really comes down to how the officer is feeling that decides if you get a defect or not. Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

This only proves rolling diameter... It has no bearing on the actual load ratings of tyres.. Yes you can get a tyre that will give you the same rolling diameter(we all konw this) but to get it to be the right rating for your vehicle you actually need to change the rolling diameter so the load rating is right. Now I have found tyres that WILL give you the correct load rating for 17's but your looking at something like $500 a tyre.. Pretty expensive game when you look at it! Just drive with the rims you have if you get caught on go the stockies to clear the sticker...

Yeah thats my thoughts too. But atleast it shows that size wise youre set. As I said on the other forum its the load rating that you'll get done on. Atleast this is a bit of extra info for the young bloke on the side of the road with a police man - no need to get defected for this if its legal.

it was something I was looking into when I put on my 17's and a mate and I came across the article on vicroads that just states rolling diameter... but there is also a section on the load rating on vehicles of certain weights not in the modifications sections. Most cops have learnt the load ratings thing now days so if you trye to baffle them with bull**** they call you on it... Unless you have the 500 buck tyres... Really just a hassle, take the sticker and get on with the day. not like its hard to clear....

you raised the issue in that linked thread... the process is based upon the assumption that the VL in question has a Walkinshaw tyre placard... It doesn't matter if VE GTS came with 20in wheels... your VE OMEGA has a Tyre placard saying 16in diameter and as such, it is measured from that.

ive done this calculation at work. the rolling diameter for 19x35x225 are the biggest 19s you can have on a vl legally. problem is cops will just find something else to d1ck you on. i think its best to slap on guages, 19s and pod filter. that way they have 3 easy things to rip you on, and they wont look for hard to fix things like holes in parcel shelf, cooler piping etc.

This would have to be to suit a particular states laws though, I had a chat with our government dept (WA) about this, the guy was pretty helpful and sent me the whole booklet they use on determinig legalities. It pretty much states that as long as the overall rolling diameter doesnt change by a certain amount, and that the tyres have the appropriate load rating you should be fine. Thats why most VL's that run 20's use the 30 profile rubber, and are limited to Nankang and Wan Li rubber, they are pretty much the 2 brands that make that size with the right load rating. Thats my understanding anyway.

You can make them legal but most larger tyres the load rating is too low and therefore un-roadwearthy...

As I posted prior its like 500 dollars a tyre if you want to get the load ratings correct just for 17's.... I would hate to see what it costs for 20's and the like

Unless you are going after top end tyres like Pirelli's etc then you should be paying abolsutely no where near that sort of money.

2" bigger in the rim is all thats permissable here in SA. That is fact...rolling diameter doesnt enter the equation...
