anyone out there with decent advice?my stroker in my vk has vn heads with pacemaker pipes.when i start it up the pipes start to glow within a minute or so.cam was dialled in within 1 degree,my static timing is 14 degrees what the guy who recurved my dizzy said to set it for initial start up.the engine starts well sounds strong but i gotta shut it down basically within a few seconds, cause im scared it might melt my electricals or worse damage the engine in some way they glow that red.to me it seems their is no space for the heat of the pipes to escape, the pacemaker pipes run close to everything!ive seen some guys with similar cars and set ups with like a coating on their extractors.is this for a reason or just for looks?is there anyone out there that can put me in the right direction?thought my muffler might be blocked could that glow the pipes?the cars been sitting around for about 9 mths while i built up this current combo, could the muffler clog up sitting around?i reckon its too lean im running a 700 dp!advice would be appreciated!

For the pipes to glow that fast something is wrong. Check that TDC is TDC. Pull number 1 plug and make sure the piston is at the top, then check your crank pulley. What comp does the engine have? What cam are you running? And is it he right cam for the heads. Does the engine start and run easy? Can you drop the pipes off after the extractors and run it? Can you run the car wirh a timing light on it and check what the timing is doing. A lean mixture will raise exhaust temps, but not enough to get red pipes that fast, and even leaner will lower exhaust temps, due to not being able to support combustion. I don't know if you have run the cam in or not, but what does the timing do when you rev it? It really seems... like a timing issue. (not saying dizzy is wrong)

You should exclude the theory that the pipes are just too close to everything. I had a V8 in a corolla and you couldnt get your fingers around anything... with 400hp, 10.5:1 comp it never glowed red. Feet got real hot though Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

there has to be a restriction in the exhaust somewhere, have you taken the mufflers/pipes apart and sussed them out?

check your a/f ratios also may be running too lean

it sounds like something in the exhaust is blocked, check all that out, evn run it for a bit with just the headers and see if it is still happening, then you will know if its an engine thing, 1 degree on the cam, it may need to be advanced more

id say most likely your cats are blocked. get a thermometer under neath. if the front of the cats are hotter than the rear of the cat housing, then you have a blocked cat.

I had the same problem while running in the cam on the vl, pipes glowed within a couple of min. After a few checks, the timing was only set at 4 deg advanced and the harmonic balancer had turned by 3, reset the timing and no red pipes. sound like the timing is retarded (doesnt take much ) if its not your exhaust
