well factory the vq's run 16's because their heavy cars... it'd be good to begin with a good diff.. im not 100% sure with ratiios but 3.7 will do.. get a good suspension that will help the car get to the speeds quicker.. get a good box.. the factory ones will need some work... a shift kit wont be enough i rekon.. all it is, is they drill more holes to get more oil to it hits harder.. so youll need more clutch packs, z packs, w/e... then put a higher stall, not sure depending on your cam setups... then with some big head work and a 286 cam.. and possibly a twin throttle manifold which isnt as restrictive.. you should be close.. theres no need to be stroking as u want a standard 304 stroke.. a bigger fuel pump will be needed with more lb injectors... then little things need to be taken into consideration... leads, exhaust, cai, minor weight reduction.. it all adds up.. and hopefully you should be there and do a 12 or lower.. because arnt the ss's running 13's? hope dis helps..i proberly missed some little things.. edit.. i wrote big head work.. u proberly wont need as much because factory their floweed to 400 hp or sumthing..but then again, stowln ran 10.86.. made 280 rwkw and had ported and polished heads..except with a 288

well, you might want to check out my car (these were all pre cam) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeAxKIrYA80 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8HZSFoUrUQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IGLqrdUq04 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quc__KWoE0I when i first got it this was how it went (notice the slips on gear change) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avwPTu83DsA this is it now - note the mass wheel spin off the line :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG_YV3lKkqk 14.96 as a stocker, only had a tune + Corvette servo for harder shifts ive just fitted a wade 818 (276 duration) heavy duty valve springs and billeted retainers (for 50thou more clearance to avoid spring bind so i can run tighter springs) my car was running a 6.29, 0-60mph and a 2.27, 0-60ft time (which will kill alot off the line for a high 14 second car) esentially, if the ls1 has a tune its gonna be hard to beat.. but on the street the ls1's are easy to beat, why you may ask? they're all top end not alot of them running in the 5 second 0-60mph bracket (you dont go faster than this on the street if your sensible) i went for the 276 cam over the 284/286 because i ran some simulations and it gives the best power band, and the cam blokes confirmed this, see peak power means **** all in the real world.. ok so, if i had less wheel spin, my car would be in the 5 second 0-60mph, biggest issue for me now is the torque developed between 1200rpm and 2000rpm is CONSIDERABLLY more meaning im loosing time spinnin the wheels heres some mods ive done and the costs 1. Corvette Servo $40, 1-2nd shift hardness and time, this is the BEST mod you can do, forget the shift kit for now its fit one of these babies 2. Cold air Intake, given that the 5L inlet manifold weighs 20kg and absorbs sooooo much heat your thermal efficiency isnt the best anything you can do to reduce intake temps will net you more power, removing headlight gave me 0.2 of a second down the 1/4 mile.. thats HUUUUGE also keep the temp at 1/3, fit a lower degree thermostat because like i said anything to reduce heat will help 3. get your self a tune, im serious my car ran a 15.3 on a stock HSV tune, then a 14.9 on a custom tune we made... if you want a hsv tune let me know i can whip you up one with the knock sensor enable/disable (incase you feel like installing one) for a VERY reasonable price (the cost of the chip its self pretty much, you have to install it 4. 2.5" exhust, i ran open headers at the drags, only made me go 0.05 seconds faster down the 1/4, soo for a 304 cubic inch a 2.5"-3" is perfect, id stick with 2.5" because its alot better for low down 5. altho the power band is considerably wider the cams performance in my car hasnt reached it potential, raised compression will net you the power with a cam, but all in due time, a converter and a retune is nesseccary for a cam, as it wont start on the stock tune due to the IAC idle being too low and idle spark not being sufficient causing a puffy exhust 6. valve springs, many people over look these, they will really help your top end (80-140) see over the years the springs compress and become spongy (mine had shrunk 1cm) imagine 5500rpm the valves are opening 91 times per second... i noticed the engine became firmed from fitting these, also a good idea to change the valve stem seals while you do them, huge gains from these 7. make sure your damn throttle opens %100, get a mate to sit in the car and push his foot down %100, check to see if the throttle doohickey hits the bump stop on the top of the shaft, and check that @ 100% throttle its dead open, if not you may be required to machine the bump stop (common problem on the v6's) get her running well and get a tune and you'll have no problems running 14s hope some of the things ive learnt help you out.. isnt that hard to beat a stock ls1.. remember power isnt everything its how its used! this is where im upto so far, i reckon it would run a 14.3 as is, and if i didnt race on a 32deg day and if my pedal allowed %100 throttle insted of %90 i would have easily run a 14.7, soo 14.3 (i hope) with $500 spent on performance, but my mate runs a 14.2 with nothing more than diff gears, tune, cai and 2.5" exhust

i thought the 5 litre ss's and the execs ran 14.6 stock like the vn's, were as the vq's ran 16's... PaRaDx - u might need a custom ground cam to get the torque peak a bit later and hold on more.. thats what were getting done, except we have a roller with a peak of 3000 and a 1900 stall, comes on good in first... also.. its would be prefered to get a cam higher up.. the 5 litres are good down low, but once their on bout 100, their a little bit lazy gettign up.. once youve driven a t56 vx ss or vy, its incredible how quick they get to anything above 100, plus they get allot of speed out of their gears.. they will get over 150 km/h in third..pretty sure we got 180 out of my mates vx ss..

its just a popular profile cam man, i can get you the specs if you want (.492 lift) they get sloppy in the top end because of the valve springs, VX is alot newer than a VP :P hell no did the vn 5L runa 14.6 stock i think its noted as 15.1 stock but most will run a 15.5 stock 165kw standard, hsv has 180kw in the vp, my peak powers estimated at 265bhp my brother had a 01 Gto monaro, it ran a 6.2, 0-60mph and a 13.9 1/4 mile stock. now mine runs a 6.29, 0-60mph and a 14.961/4 stock i was only making 94.7mph (155km/h) really intrested to see what i run next drag meet, i need more comp for this cam, they warned me it wouldnt be too efficient in the top end on stock comp, running calculations theres 10rwkw to be gained in the peak just for upping the comp to 10... watch any mafless tune or ls1 edit car and they wont crack a 5 second 0-60mph... sure over 100 they're rockets but thats not streetable Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

cant beleive im reading the dribble coming out of ur mouth paradoxx, unless u spend a good 10g's on ur injected 5.0 expect to get ur ass wiped clean on the street by any mildly modded LS1, VLT, or the likes....trust me, ive owned plenty of them, and seen plenty of ppl build them, only to tip extreme amounts of $$ into them for minor results as oppose to the LS1, which with a good tune and exhaust u can push 12 second passes out of....any1 with half a clue how to drive should be able to get the 60ft'r down lower than what ur stating.

couse u can make a 5litre beat one.. but youll be throwing a lot of money to do it.. its no comparison really, gen3 motors are to v8s what the supra is to inline 6s, bolt on power and cheap mods from the gods.

10 psi vortech blower, mild cam with headwork, extractors and twin system exhaust, bigger injectors and fuel pump, custom tune, 3000 rpm stall beefed auto and 3.9s, this is the set up im going with either in the stato or something else depending on the cam and head work u can expect between 260-280rwkw if ur engine is in good condition which should be able 2 beat stock/mild gen 3's and will most likely cost u around the 10k mark

LS1 "king" 5.0 "Poo" LS1, headers, exhaust, CAI, 160 F thermostat. Maf tune, 250-260 manual, 230-245 auto Same for 5.0 170 maybe. Best thing you mate could do in his VQ. GEN III conversion.

I had a vn calais. mild cam, stock bottom end, vortech 9 psi charger, group a injectors, 044 fuel pump, custom tune, 2200 stall with shift kit, 3.7's and ran an 11.61 down the quarter with mcreary g60 tyres. it made 254kw @ wheels. Driveline owed me about 12 grand and back then( 4-5 years ago, no ls1's got close. It can be done, just gotta research, try and get the vortech second hand and find the right tuner.

Im not sure the cost would justify the cause to be perfectly honest. Spending 5 grand on my engine has seen me rape many newer cars. The diff gears tune and shift kit has fixed the "gutless" low rpm so its all on from low down. So unless you are trying to prove a point i wouldnt bother

So unless you are trying to prove a point i wouldnt bother I agree. 5 grand on a 5.0 would fix the oil leaks and slot a cam in it. then maybe a Kalmaker tune. that may give you 170. A baby cam 222, 224, 112 lobe sep. A tune on Gen III 250-270. Tune would also include very hard shifts in the auto etc. Sell the VQ and use money to go towards a WH. LS1 bolt on kits, turbo kit 10.54 quarter mile, PD blower bolt on kit, 11.3 quarter mile, both on an un opened engine.
