its just 2 bolts to take it out. Undo those 2, then u should be able to start it by shorting the power with one of the sides using a screw driver. I forget which 2 to short out, but if u look at the wiring it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. If it spins up find off the car, maybe there's something stopping your engine from turning? If it doesn't, your starter is dead!

to test....
there are 3 or 4 terminals on the back of it. only three are used on vk's. normally the 2 that are the largest come from the battery and go to the motor of the starter itself. the third is the wire that you must test. get a mate to turn the key to start while you have the test light on the solenoid and it should flash with the key turning from start to on. if it flashes and nobodys home in it, replace the starter.
if it doesnt flash with key going on and to start, you have a bigger problem - ie starter relay or ignition switch.
hope this helps!

take the starter to an auto elec where they can bench test it, i think they do all readings like amp consumtion, out put etc etc and they compare it to what it should be and give you an exact condition of the starter

mate you couldnt be more wrong!! connect an earth to the starter housing, put 12V to the male connector and it should throw the pinion out and spin the starter. put 12V to the bolt on wire and it will just spin.
if you try the way you described nothing will happen due to all the terminals on the back are to have 12V to them at some stage or all the time. the actual housing of the starter ie where the bolt holes are is the earth. hence engine/trans to body earth is extremely important!
