Have an oil leak from the cam and/or crank oil seal so Im gonna replace both, I have managed to get the timing belt, but am left with crank gear and cam gear and am not sure what to do now (see picture - this is where I am at) Can someone explain what I need to do to get to each seal. Does the oil pump need to come off? Anything in particular I should do from here? I have a Max Elleries manual, but they are shit house. need to know soon as possible too please. Cheers Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

undo the four bolts pull the cam gear off then just pick the seals out and replace for the bottom if that gear comes of easy go buy a lotto ticket asap then replace the seal behind it or you may have to drill and tap a small thread into the gear and use a pulley to remove it *ass of job* oil pump does not need to come off just that gear

Well that gear didnt seem to want to budge at all... Is tapping a thread about the only way? So the seal is directly behind each gear there?

Tips? If you're not sure the crank seal is leaking, then do the cam seal first and see what happens... taking off the oil pump gear is not something I would do unless I really really had to.

you can see in the picture the mess thats sitting there... Im pretty sure its both, as the leak was pretty bad. I doubt they have been changed ever, so i'd rather do them both now while its all off, cause bugger ripping all that shit off again...

do it properly, while your there do both, i had to drill some holes and air chisel my gear off it was that ceased, put a hairline crack in it and she slid off. i think a new gear from nissan was like $30

drill holes and split with cold chisel or use oxy to heat gear and it should possibly slide off. biggest headfcuk rb engine timing gears. good thing they rarely leak. timing gears are near on $50 retail from nissan.

Got my new crank gear and washers today from nissan for $54. Im just going to use a cold chisel and try to crack the old gear to get it off... If you have done it this way, did you drill a hole first or just use the cold chisel straight into it? Also, did ya just go straight into the side of it where the teeth are, and how far did you go into it?

drill a two rows of small holes all the way along the gear with the two rows 180 deg apart. its the safest way to prevent damage to the crank and bearings. once you have the holes drilled, split it with the cold chisel.

Managed to get it off today. Using multiple sized chisels to seperate it from the oil pump/block enough to use a pulled to get in behind it to pull it off. But managed to damage one of the woodruff keys in the process just enough that it wont sit back into the crank. So gotta get a new one from nissan on monday as I could not find one the same size anywhere... Anyone know part number and or pricing? Putting the new crank gear on, how do you guys get around that? Started to put it on and it was extremely tight. You use a rubber mallet? Or anything else in particular? Other than that everything should be sweet as to go back on from there... What a fuck around of a job. All this for 2 50c sized oil seals... Struth

woodruff keys are like $2 each from nissan. as for the timing gear, if it doesn't slide on easy by hand, stop! it should slip over real easy, but if the crank is rusty from the old gear, run some emery paper over it to make it smooth first.

ohh right. It was a bit rusty. We gave it a quick once over with some sandpaper (it was like old school 1500 or something)... Will try that though...
