...Is it normal to have a metre-long flame out the exhaust? Cos that's what happened to mine on monday night! I'm wondering if a bit of the exhaust wheel from has come off and punched through the honeycomb in the cat? I'm pulling it apart on friday to have a look, but I'm just curious to know what normally happens?

Nah it only did it once, I think it was oil burning... it's pretty funny now, but I was shitting myself when it happened! Wish someone could have been there to see it

Excess fuel thats not burned and the exhaust is hot enough to set fire to it at the end, wild valve overlap will do that on the track, on the street, injectors flakey and stuck open perhaps as its way over being too rich and then some, ccould be oil I guess but watch it doesnt happen too often on the pedestrian crossing Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

This is how it went: I accelerated to about 100, backed off. Heard this odd kinda popping noise, and then I saw an enormous flame out my rear window. Tried to stop the car, but the flame started catching up as I slowed down! Ohhh sh*t! I accelerated again, blew the flame out, stopped having a heart attack. Drove it the rest of the way home, seemed to run fine but it makes no turbo noises anymore and makes no boost. No more flames either, just some smoke. Kinda like a non-turbo but even slower Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

my experience is paltry by comparison but we used to put slices of cold pizza on the heat shield when driving through country, sausages too, could never quite get the right sized pan to fit under the cross over pipe,

Yes we did have the occasional drum stick on the motor too, though the engine was pretty quiet at the time Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

lol, dnst sound good, i think if you blow the turbo it pisses out oil.. now i know who to blame when its 40 degrees, a total fire ban, and a total vl ban Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

Ok, I pulled it apart this afternoon and it's pretty unremarkable... the exhaust wheel is intact, the compressor wheel is intact. The cat convertor is still as it should be. The compressor wheel just touches the housing if I side load it, but even that's not too bad. Which begs the question... why the hell did I get huge flames?

perhaps its a fuel system issue and not a turbo issue

could dirty injectors cause this? running a bit to rich or running TOO advanced
