How to remove/install an auto gear box Tools needed - Full socket set and spanners - 2 jacks - Jack stands - Container to catch oil - Couple of bits of scrap wood - Screwdrivers - A jar for all your bolts!!! - Beer and a ****load of patience 1.Disconnect the car battery 2.Jack up the car and place it on jack stands 3.stick the car in neutral (not necessecary 4.Drop out the oil from the box (you dont have to but it makes life easier and less messy). If you dont know how to drop the oil from the box already then its most likely that you wont be able to do this job 5.Disconnect the 2 wiring plugs these are located at the back drivers side near the brake booster, one is white one is grey. If you are unsure of which they are just follow the ones that go under the firewall to the box 6.Remove the centre console, this is held by 3 screws in the bottom of the storage compartment, you will also need to take the handbrake handle off (just pulls off) and take the plastic insert around the shifter off. The whole console will come off when you wiggle it around a bit and get it into the right position 7.my car had a B&M shifter so if you want unbolt the tbar I am not exactly sure but instead you can just unbolt the shifter link to the box I think its a 22mm and secure it away when done 8.disconnect the speedo cable, which plugs in near the back of the box black cable with a silver end 9.hop under the car again and unbolt the tailshaft to do this make sure the hand brake is off and the rear wheels are chocked or off the ground. To remove the tail shaft you need to a.get rid of the handbrake cable by undoing the 2x13mm bolts holding it in place b.unbolt the tail shaft where it meets the diff which is 4 bolts 14mm and 15mm nuts (or the other way around I forget) c.remove the 4 bolts holding the tail shaft loop (2 each side 13mm I think) d.slide/wiggle the tail shaft out of the back of the box, it will be sticking into the rear of the box by about 10cm 10.If you didnt before you need to remove the brace under the back of the box its held in by 4 bolts about where the tail shaft meets the box and curves under the tail shaft 11.Undo the trans cooler lines and the lines to the radiator. 12. Unbolt the Oil lines to the transcooler. These are bolted to the box by 2 big bolts one halfway down the box on the passenger side and the other about 30-40cm further to the back of the box. They are also held on by a bracket mounted at the front of the sump and another further up the box (there maybe another bolt to the block as it runs to the front of the car but mine wasnt attached there although it did have provision for it) 13.Once it is loose guide out the lines gently if they dont come then check along them for any bolts securing them. 14.now place a jack under the front of the bell housing where it meets the block and raise the jack just high enough to support the bell housing. Place a piece of wood in between the jack and the bell house 15.now start unbolting all the bolts from the bell house connecting it to the block from memory there are 8 mainly 14mm. a.there are the big bolts at the bottom of the block on the engine side these are bigger than the rest I think about 16mm b.there is one bolt in between the 2 above 14mm c.there are 2 bolts behind the rocker cover 14mm THESE ARE A BITCH TO GET TOO BE PREPARERED FOR SWEARING AND SCRATCHES!! d.There are 2 bolts holding the starter motor on the drivers side e.Finally 1 bolt on the passenger side next half way up the bell housing 16.now place a jack under gearbox mount and support it with a bit of wood in between. DONT PUT IT UNDER THE SUMP! 17.Unbolt the gearbox mounts (the ones bolted to the chassis not the mounts themselves) make sure that the jack is supporting the weight of the box before you unbolt the mounts obviously! 18.you should now be able to pull the box back a few mm 19.There is a thin plate about 10cm wide and 30cm long in a semi circle shape that should drop out or can be pulled out from the bottom of between the box and the engine block. 20.If your looking towards the back of the car into the spot where that plate was you should see a flywheel which is bolted to your converter by 4 bolts (14mm I think) these 4 need to be undone before the box will separate from the block. The best way to unbolt these is to have someone with a ratchet in on the crank nut (the nut holding on the harmonic balancer 27mm??). The person on the crank nut has to oppose you undoing the flywheel bolt otherwise the flywheel will just spin in circles as you try and undo it 21. the box should now slide back a couple of inches untill it is nolonger supported by the shaft but only by the jacks. Slowly lower the 2 jacks untill the box is sitting on the ground rest it on the mount and the end of the bellhouse. 22. to remove the box from under the car you might have to remove the dipstick which is held on by 1 bolt where the shifter connects to the box (drivers side) 23. have a beer and realise it really wasnt worth it and you should have taken it to a mechanic to do it for you for $150 if you have any quesitons post here or pm me
