Hey,
I drove my car from work and it was running a little rough (first sign). When i arrrived home it just idled low and eventually switched off and wouldnt fire up again. It turns over and all but wont fire up. Bought a new working AFM and installed however that wasnt the problem. I Already installed a new fuel pump and filter the other month.
So i went out and bought a working distributor and simply removed the old one and installed the new one however still wont start. It cranks and i can hear tiny backfiring from exhaust but that all !! Have i installed the dizzy right and could any one suggest what the problem may be ??
did you ever have it run after you changed the dizzy ?
CAn you hear the fuel pump's prime for a few secs after you switch key to
ignition before you start it ?
Is the reverse polarity relay for the ECU working reliably ?
Do you hear the fuel pump relay click when put into ignition etc ?

1) no the car wouldnt start so i therfore changed the dizzy and AFM and still wouldnt start.
2)yes i can hear it prime.
3)no idea what that is
4)yes i do hear it click .
really appreicate your questioning mate .
mmmm, Well since the fuel pump relay clicks then the ECU is getting power
so the reverse polarity relay is ok.
Can you smell fuel in the exhaust, because this will tell you if the injectors
are firing and if they are then you prob dont have spark or if you do have
spark its not there when its needed.
So in conclusion:-
Check for any fuel smell in exhaust and if so then attend to spark, so could
be:-
a. Timing (bit unlikely though because if out it has good chance of occasional pop in cylinders or exhaust)
b. Power transistor
c. Coil - is it getting 12v
d. Ground strap to dizzy, helpful but some cars run ok without it, others not.
e. Connections to all of the above, fuses to any of the above etc.
Since you are in sydney, my prototype wont work so I cant see your engine,
I dont have your GPS coordinates from your ISP anyway at moment <sigh>

Well it does pop from the exhaust alot when i crank it. Thats why i was wondering maybe i didnt fit my dizzy right, even though its only a quick insert and bolt on. Any tips on timing ?? I really dont wanna tow the b itch. cbf for this s hit any more lol
ok so that means fuel is there so injectors firing and the occasional pop means
spark is also there so yeah need to line up the dizzy. Shouldnt need to tow it,
there are crowds like "Mobile Mechanic" if you want someone else to do it,
or get hold of the service manual for the VL series, gregory's might have a
minimal section to help, get hold of Vol 2 of the GMH manual, page 6A-61,
someone here might be able to clarify or email you a picture...
I turn the whole distributor thing forward and backwards and try starting it but it still wont fire up. Can any one give advice about the whole timing issue? and whether i installed the dizzy right? anything written in the gregories manual ?
pm me your email address and I'll see if I can email you a copyright free
extract of the relevant page in the proper service manual

The dizzy will be 180 deg out, so it is firing on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. Pull it out and rotate the rotor 180 deg. You will need a timing light after that to get it spot on.
To get it running at least, you could try turning the crank so the timing mark is at top dead centre, then install the dizzy with the rotor button pointing to the no.1 spark lead. I had to do that once, pulled the dizzy and didn't check where it was beforehand. If that gets it started then you'll need a timing light to fine adjust the timing.

Not quite true....you have to pull the cam belt cover off to be sure you are on the compression stroke. Remember, there are 2 crankshaft revolutions to every camshaft revolution in a 4-stroke engine cycle. To be sure you are on the compression stroke, the crank AND cam timing marks must be aligned.

spot on,
i had the same problem, i couldn't figured it out why i was back firing and not sarting. Pull the plugs out, clean them and dry them.
or could be crude and stick a long screwdriver in the cyl 1 spark plug holw, then on the up stroke, make sure the crank timing mark is on the right spot, the put the rotor to cyl 1

I must have been lucky then. Makes perfect sense though. All together the info should be useful to someone.

wow very helpful info from everyone, really appreciate it.... i took off the dizzy cap and rotated the thing inside so that it aligns but forgot to turn the car over in order that the tdc mark is also aligned on the camshaft pulley. and i will also make sure as mentioned above that my camshaft gear is aligned and the timing mark is correct. so therefore there are 3 things i will need to align, correct ? and hopefully it should at least start.
ok i aligned all these things and double checked a million times but still wont fire. the car cranks and cranks but wont fire. fuel is definately getting through as well !... any other suggestions ??
As you are definitely getting fuel then is it possible you stopped getting spark
as a result of the changes to dizzy timing ?
Take off one plug lead and plug a spark plug into it and have it laying on
rocker cover but away from any signal leads and crank it for a spark,
if spark then hey timing is still prob out
Or the ignition setup is upset so its not getting enough volts so it sparks
when out of engine but wont fire when on compression...
edit
this last thing could be grounding of coil, power transistor etc

With the work you've done these should't have been changed, but are the fuel lines on correctly? Feed line goes straight to the rail, return to the fuel regulator.
Do you have injector pulses? (hold a screwdriver to your ear while the tip is touching the injector then get a mate to crank it over) You should hear distinct "clicks".
