Im respraying my engine bay in the origninal kimberly bronze colour and ive got a few questions in reguards to body prep. Firstly am i best off going back to bare metal, the engine bay has different paint layers where brake fluids and the likes have attacked the paint. There are areas of rust which will be ground out with a wire wheel, so im a bit worried that the result is going to look **** house if i just sand the paint back lightly and spray over. Also what kind of primer should i be using? ive got to go over patches of bare metal, areas of fiberglass bog, car bog, and will be respraying the plastic bumbers at a later date. Thats all i can think of for now, thanks in advance Cheers, Matt

That came up an absolute treat fella, would have been a royal pain in the arse with the motor still in though wouldn't it? either way the results speak for themselves.

Im using a wire brush in a drill atm but looking into one of those 3M disks that go into an angle grinder as its taking for ever, it seems to take each layer of paint off individually. The only real advantage being that it leaves a smooth finish. From there i'll hit it with some wax and grease remover, then a coat of primer filler. Sand it all back lightly and apply the first light layer of paint. Goal is to be ready to hit the primer by sunday night. well heres hoping. Also, open to any better idea's as to getting this paint off!

all the factory lumps and bumps were tapped up and under the air box it had a big cold air in take hole so cut out a big triangle and weldered a patch in and same goes with the rusted section under the battery Some original photos have not been recovered yet.

No need to sand it back to bare metal unless you're treating rust. You'll have to etch coat the metal now, then prime it. Sanding the paint back (not to bare metal) with an 80grit disk would have been ok, then sand it with 180 if you want it smoother. Prime over the paint with some HS primer, prolly 2-3 coats to fill any scratches you still have, then paint away.

painting engine bays is quite difficult, so if you havent done much painting before, make sure you practice on something flat, like an old door or something. if you dont, odds are you will get lots of dry spots and/or runs because you dont have any level surface to follow and you are constantly moving the gun in different positions and angles. going by the pics shonkytrb has done an great job, doesnt appear to be any dryspray etc, im guessing he has a bit of experience when it comes to painting...

must be the time of year, i am in doing my bay as well!! if you want to take it back to metal i would get a wire brush or a sanding disk for the angle grinder, as it will be 10 times fast than a drill with a wire brush.

ok quick question i need answered, im begining spraying still laying down the etch primer. When i begin spraying the final coat im scared that it may run in tigher areas, if it does can it be sanded back lightly using #600 and still have it come out looking decent? What should i do if this occurs? or more to the point when lol Cheers, Matt
