My vlt is struggling to get past three grand, but slowly does. If you flat stick you feel boost start coming on then she struggles the get past three grand but it does slowly rev. Any ideas on the problem.

MY VLC used to do that, because the auto was rooted.
Is the throttle body restricted in any way? Sensors (AFM)?

timing, camshaft out or ignition timing to far retarded

My mates got this problem if anyone can shed more light on it... It's had a new CAS and the timing is now out but it did this before that as well???

Disconnect battery, Change AFM over for a new one, reconnect battery in 5 minutes. See how you go

just try a different AFM... if the computer senses the AFM is not connected it runs in 'limp' mode and wont allow it to rev past 3g....

Are there any other symptoms when it wont rev, like black smoke, groaning
noises from the tranny, what tranny auto or manual, any turbo whine sounds
etc etc
Timing would have to be a *long* way out for a motor not to rev much.
You could have a warped cam tunnel, so the cam is held so tightly robbing
way too much power so it wont rev, pretty unlikely but stranger things have
happened.
Do you have enough oil pressure ?
Good to know a lot more as some issues are pointers and complete the picture,

if its your timming, it sounds pretty badly f*cked
the timming on my vl was a little rooted, not as bad as that though.
its worth getting checked out though

Ok plenty of oil pressure, no smoke what so ever, possibly a bit of a strange noise from the auto not real distinct though. Thanks guys

10-09-07, 21:19 GMT+10#10 mmmm, Is there noise from the auto when its in neutral or park when you
rev it ?
Since there is no smoke and plenty of oil pressure then it suggests your
turbo is acting like a restrictor, wouldnt have anything jammed in the air
intake in front of filter like a piece of newspaper ?
Edit:
But yes as Hingo mentioned if AFM is detected as faulty then engine wont
rev up - from my experience its around 2000 rpms, as it revs up to that point
you hear it cough loudly and cut out - does yours do that ?

10-09-07, 21:26 GMT+10#11 my vlt had exactly the same problem changed everything! and it ended up being the engine wiring loom, got it put it on and she was done.

11-09-07, 21:48 GMT+10#13 is the engine reving smoothly?
fuel pressure?
will the engine rev past 3000 in neutral easily? how about if you hold it in 1st?
bit of an odd problem

11-09-07, 22:08 GMT+10#14 mmmm, yes its weird, someone else had similar problem, if it also does it in
neutral/park when no load on engine then could be dying spark, ie Enough
volts to run spark at lower revs when less load on coil circuitry but not enough
to switch coil reliably when coil driver loses volts due to more frequent firing
requirement. Someone else ages ago reported they fixed a grounding issue for
the coil and it went away...
Suggest put a voltmeter on coil and try it both ways with ground on batt -ve
or on block and see if average voltage on meter changes much when you
rev the engine...?

12-09-07, 00:11 GMT+10#16 mmmm, maybe I took too much account of the posters report of 3000rpms
when the ECU limp mode is more like 2000rpms, I mean it will peak above
2000rpms quite a bit, so the more it sounds like it, it could be a connector or
loom failure so the ECU doesnt see the AFM signal within its expected range.
So yeah, check the AFM voltage is appearing at the ECU connector inside
the cabin and make sure that connector is not corroded from water
or condensation that got into the cabin..!

12-09-07, 19:52 GMT+10#17 Thanks guys i'll have a look at it tomorrow night. Also what about the possibility that it doesn't have enough power to drive over the convertor and lock it up?

No.
Torque converter is effectively a turbine and 'slip' reduces when it "stalls"
to the point the fluid dynamics changes dramatically, ie. doesnt take much
power to do that at all, pumping fluid around doesnt take that much energy
in comparison with that needed for locomotion...

14-09-07, 12:51 GMT+10#19 Having the same probs with mine last time It was on the road. I never sorted it out. It would rev freely in neutral, but couldnt go past 3K in gear. Got me stumped, but I think I'll try new fuel pumps next.

strange, what about going down hill in gear when engine on no load, will
it then rev up to 6000 ?
is it possible its getting to 3000rpms and the wastegate is vibrating/opening
almost regardless of boost ?
